Sleep quality also depends on the air you breathe and the atmosphere of the bedroom. Some plants purify the air, produce oxygen at night, increase ambient humidity, and visually create a calmer, more natural space. They are not sleeping pills — but they contribute to an environment conducive to rest, night after night.
Sansevieria: the plant that breathes at night
Most plants absorb oxygen at night and release CO2. Sansevieria does the opposite: it uses CAM metabolism (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) to capture CO2 at night and release oxygen while you sleep. It is the most recommended bedroom plant by NASA to improve indoor air quality. The Sansevieria Moonshine with its pale silvery green foliage creates a soft, moonlit atmosphere — perfect for a bedroom. The compact Whitney (H27 cm) fits on a bedside table without taking up space. The Fernwood Mikado, with its thin cylindrical leaves, is the most discreet.
Aloe vera: nighttime oxygen and purified air
Aloe vera shares the same CAM metabolism as Sansevieria — it produces oxygen at night. Additionally, it filters formaldehyde and benzene found in paints, furniture, and bedroom textiles — air-purifying plants combine this filtering ability with beneficial oxygen production. Placed on a windowsill or bedside table, it only needs watering every 2 to 3 weeks. The Aloe vera in jade pot comes ready to place in a soft green decorative pot that matches the bedroom atmosphere.
Lavender: the scent of sleep
Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote Blue is the only plant in this selection whose effect on sleep is directly linked to its scent. The linalool in its flowers is a documented natural anxiolytic — several clinical studies show it reduces heart rate and promotes falling asleep. On the bedroom windowsill, it subtly scents the air every evening. Its dried flowers slipped into a sachet under the pillow extend the effect. Lavender needs plenty of light — a south or southwest-facing bedroom is ideal.
Spathiphyllum: natural humidifier
Spathiphyllum (peace lily) transpires abundantly through its large leaves, naturally increasing the room’s humidity. In winter, when heating dries out bedroom air (often below 30% humidity), this plant transpiration reduces mucous membrane dryness, throat irritation, and nighttime awakenings. The Spathiphyllum in a bronze or gray ceramic pot is the most suitable size for a bedroom — elegant and quiet. It tolerates partial shade and also filters trichloroethylene and ammonia.
Palms: purification and serenity
Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm) and Chamaedorea elegans are both known for their purifying and humidifying properties. The Kentia, with its drooping fronds, creates a soothing, muffled atmosphere — its graceful form and gentle rustling when the window is opened add a sensory dimension that promotes relaxation. The Chamaedorea is the most compact (H55 cm) and best suited for smaller bedrooms. Both are non-toxic, an essential criterion for the master bedroom as well as children’s rooms.
Chlorophytum and Maranta: the calming duo
Chlorophytum (spider plant) is one of the best indoor air purifiers — it absorbs carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and xylene. Non-toxic and nearly indestructible, it can be placed anywhere in the bedroom. Maranta leuconeura (prayer plant) adds a soothing plant ritual: its leaves fold up each evening at nightfall, as if preparing to sleep along with you. This nycthemeral movement visible to the naked eye creates a connection with the natural day-night rhythm.
Create a bedroom conducive to sleep
Two to three plants are enough to improve the air in a standard-sized bedroom. Ideally: a Sansevieria or Aloe vera for nighttime oxygen, a Spathiphyllum or Chamaedorea for humidification, and possibly a lavender for scent if the window faces south. Avoid overcrowding — too many plants in a closed space can increase humidity beyond comfort. The air-purifying plants for the bedroom collection includes other suitable species, and the plant relaxation corner offers ideas to transform the bedroom into a true green cocoon.
