A palm tree in the living room is an instant trip to the tropics. Majestic stature, fan-shaped or feather-like leaves, a silhouette that structures the space — indoor palms are statement plants that transform any room. And contrary to popular belief, most are surprisingly easy to care for and tolerate partial shade.
Kentia: the king of indoor palms
Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm) is the most elegant and tolerant indoor palm. Native to Lord Howe Island off Australia, it has decorated hotel lobbies and Victorian living rooms since the 19th century. Its graceful, drooping fronds create a refined and calming atmosphere. It tolerates partial shade, dry heating air, and occasional missed waterings — everything an apartment can throw at it.
Areca: the golden palm
Dypsis lutescens (Areca palm) is the brightest of the family. Its golden stems and soft green fronds bring lightness and brightness. It grows faster than the Kentia, and its bushy form makes it an excellent indoor privacy screen. It enjoys bright light and regular watering. The Duo Dypsis & Chamaedorea combines two complementary palms in one purchase.
Fan palms: Livistona and Rhapis
Livistona (Chinese fan palm) and Rhapis excelsa (fan palm) stand out with their round, fan-cut leaves — a very different silhouette from feather palms. The Livistona chinensis reaches 100 cm with a compact, graphic form. The 120 cm Rhapis excelsa is one of the largest in our catalog, with dense, persistent foliage that makes it a remarkable indoor privacy screen. Discover our Livistona collection and our XXL large plants collection.
Compact palms for small spaces
Chamaedorea elegans (Mexican mountain palm) is the perfect palm for small spaces and low-light rooms. At 55 cm, it adds a tropical touch without taking up space. It is also one of the most shade-tolerant palms — it thrives even in a corner of a room away from the window. The Brighamia insignis (Hawaiian palm) with its bottle-shaped trunk topped by a cluster of leaves is an unusual and very decorative palm. Check out our small spaces collection.
Caryota and Cycas: sculptural palms
Caryota mitis (fish tail palm) is the most original: its leaflets shaped like fish fins resemble no other palm. At 120 cm, it is a centerpiece that draws all eyes. Cycas revoluta (Japanese sago palm) is technically not a palm but a prehistoric plant — its compact dwarf palm form and thick, glossy fronds make it a classic of interior design. Explore our article XXL plants: which to choose and how to integrate them.
Indoor palm care
Indoor palms require little but regular care. Water when the surface of the soil dries out — on average once a week in spring and summer, every two weeks in winter. They appreciate ambient humidity: mist the fronds or place the pot on a tray of moist clay pebbles. Most tolerate partial shade but grow better in bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which burns the fronds. Our complete watering guide and our month-by-month care calendar detail best practices.
Non-toxic palms: safe for the whole family
Good news: all true palms in our catalog (Kentia, Areca, Chamaedorea, Livistona, Rhapis, Caryota) are non-toxic to humans and animals. It is one of the safest plant families for homes with children or pets. Discover our pet-friendly indoor plants collection and non-toxic plants for babies and children, and our article toxic plants: guide to protect children and pets.
