Frequently asked questions
Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria Mikado soft? Soft leaves almost always indicate the start of root rot due to overwatering. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away the black and soft roots, let it dry for 48 hours in open air before repotting in fresh, well-draining soil.
Can Sansevieria Mikado live outdoors? It can spend the summer outdoors in a bright spot without intense direct sunlight, but it must be brought inside before autumn — it cannot tolerate frost or prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Outdoors, reduce watering even more as rain may be sufficient.

🌿 Slender, elongated cylindrical leaves • 🎨 Architectural, graphic growth habit • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Very little watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying
The Sansevieria cylindrica 'Mikado', also known as mother-in-law's tongue, is an indoor succulent native to the arid regions of West Africa. Its slender, elongated cylindrical leaves grow vertically like mikado sticks - a unique architectural growth habit that is both airy and sculptural, bringing a touch of contemporary design and graphic verticality to any space.
Air-purifying, virtually indestructible, available in two sizes: H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm and H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. Pair it with other Sansevierias and bedroom plants.
Which Sansevieria variety should you choose?
The Sansevieria genus offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes — here are the varieties available in our catalogue:
- Sansevieria cylindrica 'Mikado' (this plant) — slender, elongated cylindrical leaves with an airy, architectural growth habit. The unique minimalist graphic version.
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' — more compact, dense cylindrical leaves. The compact cylindrical version.
- Sansevieria 'Futura Superba' — short, broad leaves with golden-yellow margins. The compact variegated version.
- Sansevieria zeylanica — long, narrow leaves with zebra-like patterns and a slender growth habit. The elegant classic version.
- Sansevieria 'Laurentii' — long leaves with bright yellow margins and an imposing vertical growth habit. The timeless iconic version.
- Sansevieria 'Moonshine' — flat, light silvery-green leaves with a bright, compact growth habit. The modern silver version.
- Sansevieria 'Black Coral' — flat, very dark green leaves with a dark, graphic growth habit. The dark and elegant version.
- Sansevieria 'Straight' — straight and rigid leaves, with a strict, clean vertical growth habit. The classic architectural version.
Why choose Mikado? Its airy form and ultra-fine cylindrical leaves create an effect of verticality and lightness that no other Sansevieria can reproduce — a statement plant for minimalist design enthusiasts.
Light & placement
Sansevieria Mikado is extremely tolerant — it adapts to almost any light conditions, from full sun to shade. The brighter the light, the more vigorous the growth.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — tolerates shade, but growth will be slower.
- Ideal: office, living room, bedroom, entryway, or any bright space.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C — tolerates fluctuations; avoid frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — potting soil for cacti and succulents with perlite or sand.
Its cylindrical leaves create a spectacular interplay of shade and light — especially visible with side lighting in the evening.
Watering & care
Excess water is the only real way to kill a Sansevieria Mikado. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering — if in doubt, wait another week. This habit is the foundation of proper watering.
- Watering: low — let the substrate dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and a very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air — no misting needed.
- Fertilizer: every 6 to 8 weeks in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for cacti.
In winter, watering once a month is enough — or even less if the plant is in a cool place. The roots rot much faster during the cold season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its airy form and slender cylindrical leaves add verticality and lightness — it structures a space without ever overcrowding it.
- Pairing: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Beaucarnea for a graphic, low-maintenance arrangement — the same needs, the same contemporary aesthetic.
- Ideal pot: a Mayk lead-gray pot Ø20 cm for the large H70 variant — its matte lead-gray shade contrasts elegantly with the slender cylindrical leaves.
- Atmosphere: perfect as a statement plant on an entryway console, windowsill, or as an architectural accent in a minimalist living room.
The large H70 cm variant creates a spectacular plant-column effect in a corner of the room — a living sculpture that requires almost no maintenance.
Verdeia tips
- Excess water is its only real danger — always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering, checking by inserting your finger up to 3 cm deep. A Sansevieria Mikado can easily go 3 to 4 weeks without water in winter without any problems.
- Ideal for the bedroom — like all Sansevieria, it produces oxygen at night through crassulacean acid metabolism and removes certain indoor air pollutants. This phenomenon lies at the heart of the link between plants and air quality.
- Propagate by division when repotting — every 2 to 3 years in spring, carefully separate the offsets that have appeared at the base. Each division will root easily in a new pot with well-draining substrate.
- The cylindrical leaves lean slightly — this is natural and part of the sculptural charm of this variant. A pronounced lean accompanied by soft leaves, however, indicates the beginning of root rot caused by excess water.
