Frequently asked questions
What pruning should be applied to a Clematis Nubia Boulevard? The 'Nubia' is a group 2 clematis — prune lightly in March by removing dead stems above a strong bud, then prune moderately after each flowering to encourage repeat blooming.
Can the Clematis Nubia grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, that is actually its primary purpose — designed in the Boulevard series for pot cultivation, it blooms from the first year in a deep, well-drained container exposed to gentle sun or partial shade.

🔴 Large purple-red flowers from June to September • 🌿 Flowers from base to top from the first year • 🌤️ Gentle sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Nubia' is a compact clematis originating from Europe (United Kingdom), bred by Raymond Evison and presented at the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show as part of the Boulevard series. Its large, star-shaped, deep purple-red flowers, 12 to 15 cm across and streaked with lighter red on each tepal, bloom in profusion along the entire height of the stem — from base to top. Ideal for balconies, terraces, and pergolas, it is specifically bred for growing in pots.
Very free-flowering, very hardy and easy to care for, it is one of the clematis that perform best in pots — it flowers from the first year and stands out for its continuous repeat flowering throughout the summer.
Which clematis should you choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection covers every flowering season and every color. Here is how 'Nubia' compares with the other varieties in the catalog:
- Clematis 'Nubia' (this plant) — large deep purple-red flowers, continuous flowering from June to September, compact habit ideal for pots. The most repeat-flowering and free-flowering red variety.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large deep ruby red flowers, flowering from June to September. The classic red version, more vigorous for covering a large area.
- Clematis 'Jackmanii' — large purple-violet flowers, profuse summer flowering from July to September. The most vigorous for covering a large pergola.
- Clematis 'Multi Blue' — large double violet-blue flowers, two flushes of flowers per year. The most spectacular and most compact blue variety.
- Clematis 'The President' — large deep violet flowers, continuous flowering from May to October. The reliable classic with a very long season.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers with red stamens, elegant spring bloom. The choice for a very pure white combination early in the season.
Exposure & location
'Nubia' follows the golden rule for clematis: head in the sun, feet in the shade. Bred for growing in pots, it adapts to all container sizes and performs best in a sunny to partly shaded spot, sheltered from strong winds that weaken the stems. Its special feature: it flowers from bottom to top — no stem is "wasted."
- Exposure: gentle sun or partial shade — ideal facing east or west, sheltered from winds.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch, or pergola — its leaf-stalk tendrils cling on their own.
- Soil: cool, fertile, well-drained — tolerates chalky soil.
- In a pot: deep container with surface mulching to keep roots cool.
To protect roots without mulching, place a flat slate or some stones on the soil in front of the base of the pot — this is the simplest method to keep roots cool on a paved terrace exposed to sun.
Watering & care
'Nubia' is a group 2 clematis — it flowers on the previous year's shoots and on new growth, which allows it to rebloom in summer. A good spring restart and consistently moist soil are enough to maintain continuous flowering. If leaves turn yellow, check watering and fertilization levels.
- Watering: keep the soil moist — never let it dry out completely, especially in pots in summer.
- Pruning: group 2 — light pruning in March (remove dead stems and trim above a bud); moderate pruning after the first bloom to encourage reblooming.
- Fertilizer: flowering plant fertilizer granules in spring and after the first bloom.
- Mulching: 5 to 8 cm at the base to keep the roots cool.
- Propagation: by semi-woody stem cuttings in summer.
After the first flowering in June, prune the faded stems back to the first visible healthy bud — this action systematically triggers the second wave of red flowers from late August to September.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep purple-red of 'Nubia' is one of the warmest and most dramatic colors among our climbing plants. It pairs naturally with whites, creams, and dark foliage for a very romantic green terrace.
- For a very classic red and white duo, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice', an evergreen white-flowering climber, clothes the base of the support all year round — its glossy evergreen foliage and fragrant white summer flowers create a clean, striking contrast with the deep red of 'Nubia'.
- For a very warm red and pink combination, the Crazy in Love 'Pink' rose in bright pink pairs naturally with 'Nubia' on the same pergola — the two repeat-flowering climbers take turns and overlap in complementary colors from June until the first frosts.
- To extend the season with fragrance as a bonus, the Lonicera 'Belgica' with its fragrant red and cream flowers blooms from May to July before 'Nubia' takes over — together, the two climbers cover the support from May to September with complementary moods.
- To set off the red in a pot on a terrace, the white Elho Greenville Round pot creates the clearest color contrast — neutral white amplifies the brilliance of the purple-red flowers and suits every terrace style.
'Nubia' is one of the few clematis that flowers from base to top — place it on a support visible along its entire height rather than hidden against a wall, to enjoy the curtain effect of red flowers along the whole stem.
Verdeia tips
- Prune after the first flowering to trigger repeat flowering: 'Nubia' is repeat-flowering — cutting back faded stems to the first healthy bud after June systematically triggers a second wave of red flowers in August-September, without which the plant would not flower again.
- Mulch the base generously at planting: 6 to 8 cm of organic mulch keeps the roots cool and produces much more abundant flowering — this is the most rewarding step for this variety, whose roots are particularly sensitive to summer heat in a pot.
- Fan the stems out across the support from the start: 'Nubia' flowers along the entire length of the stems, not just at the top — a horizontal or fanwise arrangement from planting maximizes the visible flowering surface and creates a dense curtain of flowers rather than a concentrated bouquet at the top.
