🌿 Silver foliage with metallic reflections • 🪞 Very bright variegation • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Very easy to care for • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm
The Aglaonema 'Silverado', also called silver Aglaonema, displays slender lance-shaped leaves with light green variegation crossed by wide shiny silver bands. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this bright variety ranks among the most tolerant Aglaonemas and partial shade plants in the catalog.
Its uniqueness among Aglaonemas: a particularly extensive silver variegation covering most of the leaf, and exceptional tolerance to low light, making it the ideal plant for dimly lit corners indoors, where most tropical plants wither.
Which Aglaonema variety to choose?
The Aglaonema genus offers a remarkable palette of colors and patterns — here are the main varieties in the catalog:
- Aglaonema 'Silverado' (this plant) — slender lance-shaped leaves with a wide shiny silver band on a light green background, compact size (H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The brightest and most metallic silver version.
- Aglaonema 'B.J. Freedman' — large dark green leaves with graphic silver veins, generous habit (H70 cm | Pot Ø24 cm). The largest and most sophisticated version.
- Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' — large oval silver-green leaves, more diffuse marbled patterns, generous habit. The silver version with the widest leaves.
- Aglaonema 'White Joy' — very variegated creamy white foliage on a soft green background (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most contrasting and graphic version.
- Aglaonema 'Greenlight' — bright light green foliage with subtle patterns. The freshest and most soothing version.
- Aglaonema 'Keylime' — bright lemon green and graphic foliage. The most vibrant version.
- Aglaonema 'Spring Red' — foliage marbled with vermilion red on a dark green background (H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most colorful and bold version.
- Aglaonema 'Maria' — green foliage with silver reflections, classic patterns. The most traditional and accessible version.
Exposure & location
The Aglaonema 'Silverado' thrives in moderate to low indirect light. Its tolerance to shade is exceptional, but too little light greatly slows growth and reduces variegation. Avoid direct sun which fades and burns the variegated foliage.
- Exposure: moderate to low indirect light — away from a window, in a bright hallway or a corner of a room with indirect light.
- Location: living room, office, bedroom, bathroom, hallway — even low-light spaces suit it.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C — minimum 15 °C in winter, dislikes cold drafts.
- Soil type: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite or coconut fiber.
The lower the light, the slower the growth — this is normal and not serious, the plant remains healthy and keeps its bright silver foliage.
Watering & maintenance
The Aglaonema appreciates a slightly moist substrate during growth but does not tolerate water stagnation at the base. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes with this plant: always let the surface dry between waterings.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry out 2 to 3 cm between waterings, about every 7 to 10 days in spring and summer, more spaced out in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with holes, clay balls at the bottom, saucer always emptied.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air but appreciates occasional misting of the leaves, especially in winter during heating.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from March to September only.
- Care: gently remove yellowing basal leaves by cutting them at the base of the petiole to keep a clean silhouette.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot — the Aglaonema likes to feel a bit snug.
Dust the leaves with a soft damp cloth once a month — the thin layer of dust dulls the characteristic silver shine of the foliage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its silver foliage reflecting light, the Aglaonema 'Silverado' instantly brightens dark corners and dimly lit rooms. To create a relaxing green corner, it pairs well with other shade-tolerant plants with contrasting foliage.
- For a shade plant duo, pair it with an Aspidistra elatior with deep glossy green foliage — the solid dark green of the Aspidistra highlights the silver variegation of the Silverado, and both plants share the same tolerance for low light.
- For a sophisticated silver composition, surround it with a Peperomia Napoli Nights with slate-gray foliage and silver reflections — two shades of silver-gray that converse in a chic, contemporary monochrome palette.
- To add vertical structure, add a Sansevieria 'Spearmint' with light green upright blades — the erect, graphic form of the Sansevieria contrasts with the spreading clump of the Aglaonema in a balanced composition.
- To enhance the silver palette, slip it into a Capi Nature Groove taupe decorative pot with subtle vertical grooves — the warm, neutral taupe resonates with the silver foliage and creates a soft, natural atmosphere.
The Aglaonema 'Silverado' is perfect for offices, waiting rooms, or hallways with soft lighting — it remains vibrant where other tropical plants would wither.
Verdeia tips
- Adjust watering to the light received: the darker the location, the slower the plant consumes water and the less it needs. Space out waterings accordingly and rely on the substrate’s condition, never on a fixed schedule.
- Maintain a stable temperature above 15 °C: Aglaonema is very sensitive to cold and drafts. Keep it away from poorly insulated windows in winter and exterior-facing entrance doors.
- Propagate by cuttings to multiply the plant: the side shoots that appear at the base root easily in a glass of water or directly in light substrate — a simple way to get new identical plants.
