Frequently Asked Questions
When to prune the Fargesia 'Moontears' Boobux? Prune after the spring growth in May-June, once the new canes have reached their final height — pruning too early in March-April cuts growing canes and results in an uneven shape.
Can the Fargesia 'Moontears' Boobux become invasive? No, like all Fargesia it is a clumping bamboo that doesn’t spread — its clump only expands by a few centimeters per year and doesn’t require any rhizome barrier, whether in a pot or in the ground.

🌿 Dense bright green evergreen foliage all year round • 🚫 Non-spreading — no barrier needed • ✂️ Prunes like boxwood • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø29 cm
Fargesia 'Moontears'® Boobux is a compact non-spreading bamboo native to the mountains of China, specifically selected as an alternative to boxwood. Its bright green evergreen foliage, naturally rounded dense clump, and ability to tolerate pruning make it the ideal boxwood replacement for low hedges, borders, and decorative pots — without the diseases that have devastated boxwoods for years. It is the most compact variety, perfectly suited for small structured spaces.
Non-invasive, hardy down to –20 °C, and low maintenance, it is a reliable choice to sustainably structure a balcony, terrace, or urban garden with graphic, soothing greenery all year round.
Which Fargesia variety to choose?
The Verdeia Fargesia collection offers two non-spreading bamboos with distinct characters. Here’s how the 'Moontears'® Boobux compares to the other catalog reference:
- Fargesia 'Moontears'® Boobux (this plant) — compact and dense habit (H70 cm), tight bright green foliage, rounded silhouette that prunes like boxwood. The modern variety for low hedges, borders, and structured pots in small spaces.
- Fargesia rufa — reddish culms, light green drooping foliage, graceful and airy habit (up to 3 m). The classic variety for taller hedges, green screens, or statement pots on large terraces.
Exposure & location
'Moontears'® Boobux is the most tolerant bamboo to tough urban conditions — it thrives in full sun, partial shade, and light shade with equal vigor. Its slow, contained growth makes it perfectly suited for confined spaces, in pots or in the ground, with no risk of spreading. A sheltered spot protected from drying winds preserves the foliage’s brightness.
- Exposure: full sun, partial shade, or light shade — adapts to all orientations.
- Location: low hedges, borders, troughs, decorative pots — in pots or in the ground.
- Soil: rich, fresh, and well-drained — tolerates most garden soils.
- In pots: delivered in Ø29 cm — repot into a 40 cm container after 2 to 3 years if the clump overflows.
For a compact, dense hedge in the ground, space plants 40 to 50 cm apart — clumps merge within one season to form a uniform border without the need for formative pruning.
Watering & maintenance
Once established, 'Moontears'® Boobux is low maintenance. In pots, the main challenge is to keep the substrate fresh without overwatering — the finger test is enough to gauge watering. If the foliage yellows outside dry periods, check the usual causes of yellowing — often too dry soil or nitrogen deficiency.
- Watering: regular in pots, keep substrate slightly moist — reduce in winter.
- Pruning: after spring growth (May-June), prune to desired shape like boxwood — the plant tolerates severe pruning and quickly thickens up.
- Fertilizer: organic in spring to support new culm growth.
- Mulching: 8 to 10 cm at the base in the ground to retain summer freshness and protect roots in winter.
Unlike Fargesia rufa, which does not tolerate height pruning, 'Moontears'® Boobux is specifically selected to tolerate ball or hedge pruning — its major advantage over other bamboos.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The compact silhouette and bright vivid green color of 'Moontears'® Boobux create a graphic, calming plant structure that fits equally well in a contemporary Mediterranean garden or an urban jungle composition.
- For a structured low hedge with alternating textures, pair it with Uncinia rubra 'Everflame' on the border — the coppery red of the grass contrasts with the bamboo’s dense bright green for a warm-cool palette that is very graphic all season long.
- For a statement pot on a contemporary terrace, combine it in a trio with Fargesia rufa in a larger neighboring container — the contrast between Boobux’s compact rounded clump and rufa’s graceful drooping silhouette creates a lively bamboo composition.
- For a shaded border bed, plant it in front of Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® — the bamboo’s dense bright green border highlights the hydrangea’s huge white flower clusters behind.
- To enhance the pruned shape in a pot, a black or anthracite gray ceramic container highlights the bamboo’s rounded silhouette and creates the sharpest color contrast with the foliage’s bright green.
Pruned as a ball, cube, or low hedge, 'Moontears'® Boobux is the only evergreen grass in the catalog suitable for formal pruning — a rare design freedom among bamboos.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune after spring growth, not before: wait until new culms reach their final height in May-June before shaping — pruning too early in March-April cuts growing culms and results in uneven shape.
- Water generously for the first 6 weeks after planting: 'Moontears'® takes several weeks to root in its final spot — regular watering during this period prevents water stress that would yellow and drop some foliage.
- Remove old culms at the base every 2 to 3 years: cut the oldest, thickest culms at ground level in spring — this stimulates new fine, bright culms that maintain the variety’s characteristic density and bright green color.
