The Fargesia 'Moontears'® Boobux is a compact, non-running bamboo native to the mountains of China, specifically selected as an alternative to boxwood. Its bright green evergreen foliage, naturally rounded dense clump and ability to tolerate pruning make it the ideal replacement for boxwood in low hedges, borders and decorative pots - without the diseases that have been decimating boxwood for years. It is the most compact variety and the best suited to small, structured spaces.
Non-invasive, hardy down to –20 °C and requiring minimal maintenance, it is a reliable choice for giving lasting structure to a balcony, terrace or urban garden with graphic, soothing greenery all year round.

- Fargesia 'Moontears'® Boobux (this plant) - compact, dense growth (H70 cm), tightly packed bright green foliage and a rounded silhouette that can be pruned like boxwood. The modern variety for low hedges, borders and structured pots in small spaces.
- Fargesia rufa - reddish culms, light green cascading foliage and a graceful, airy habit (up to 3 m). The classic variety for taller hedges, green screens or statement pots on a large terrace.
Light & placement
'Moontears'® Boobux is the bamboo most tolerant of difficult urban conditions - it accepts full sun, partial shade and light shade with equal vigour. Its slow, contained growth makes it perfectly suited to restricted spaces, in a pot or in the ground, with no risk of spreading. A position sheltered from drying winds helps preserve the brilliance of the foliage.

- Soil: rich, moist and well drained - tolerates most garden soils.

For a compact, dense hedge in the ground, space plants 40 to 50 cm apart - the clumps merge within one season and form an even border without requiring formative pruning.
Watering & care
Once established, 'Moontears'® Boobux is undemanding. In a pot, the main challenge is keeping the substrate moist without excess water - the finger test is enough to gauge watering. Foliage that turns yellow outside periods of drought often has one of the usual causes of yellowing: soil that is too dry or a lack of nitrogen.
- Watering: regular in a pot, keep the substrate slightly moist - reduce frequency in winter.
- Pruning: after the spring growth flush (May-June), prune to the desired shape like boxwood - the plant tolerates hard pruning and quickly becomes dense again.
- Fertiliser: apply organic fertiliser in spring to support the growth of new culms.
- Mulching: 8 to 10 cm around the base in the ground to retain summer moisture and protect the roots in winter.
Unlike Fargesia rufa, which does not tolerate being pruned at height, 'Moontears'® Boobux was specifically selected to tolerate ball or hedge pruning - this is its major advantage over other bamboos.

- Water generously for the first 6 weeks after planting: 'Moontears'® takes several weeks to root into its permanent position - regular watering during this period prevents water stress that could cause some of the foliage to turn yellow and fall.
- Remove old culms at the base every 2 to 3 years: cut the oldest, thickest culms down to ground level in spring - this stimulates the growth of new, fine, bright culms that maintain the density and characteristic bright green colour of this variety.
