Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Philodendron Imperial Green tolerate a low-light room? It tolerates partial shade, for example at the back of a living room or in a bright entryway, but it grows more slowly there and its new leaves remain smaller than in bright, indirect light.
How large does the Philodendron Imperial Green grow? Indoors, it reaches a height of 80 to 100 cm within a few years, with a similar width and slow to moderate growth.

💚 Large glossy green leaves • 🌿 Dense, upright rosette • 🪴 No stake, no vine • ⛅ Bright light or partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 👍 Very easy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Philodendron 'Imperial Green' forms a dense rosette of large, oval, thick, glossy green leaves, all emerging from the heart of the plant. A hybrid derived from species of the tropical forests of South America, it belongs to the philodendrons known as “self-supporting”: it does not climb or trail as a vine, but fills out in place while maintaining a neat silhouette.
Delivered at 65 cm tall, it already makes an impression on the floor or a low piece of furniture. It is one of the easiest large indoor plants to care for: it tolerates partial shade, copes with a missed watering and needs neither a stake nor pruning.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The large philodendrons in the catalog, depending on the space and style you are looking for:
- Philodendron 'Imperial Green' (this plant) — large, oval, glossy green leaves in an upright rosette, H65 cm. The easiest and most compact of the large formats.
- Philodendron Congo Red — dark green leaves with burgundy highlights and red petioles, H80 cm. For a touch of dark color.
- Philodendron 'Green Wonder' — long leaves on reddish petioles, spreading growth habit, H100 cm. The most spectacular choice for a large room.
- Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' — the same rosette growth habit, with copper-orange young leaves. For a smaller, more colorful option.

Exposure & location
Imperial Green adapts to most interiors, from a bright living room to a slightly more secluded spot. The more indirect light it receives, the more leaves it produces and the larger they are.
- Light: bright and indirect preferably, partial shade tolerated; direct afternoon sun turns the leaves yellow.
- Location: living room, office, bright entryway, next to a sofa or a curtained glass door.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- To avoid: radiators, air conditioning directed at the plant, and cold drafts.
Turn the pot a quarter turn each month: the leaves orient themselves toward the light and the rosette remains nicely symmetrical.
Watering & care
Its thick leaves and large central stem store the water: it tolerates being forgotten much better than overwatering. Low leaves that turn yellow almost always indicate soil that is too wet, as explained in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate - when the first 3 to 4 centimeters of potting soil are dry, about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
- Water: at room temperature; empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for green plants, once a month from spring to the end of summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every three or four weeks to keep them shiny.
- Repotting: every two to three years in spring, in a pot 3 to 5 cm wider, with well-draining potting soil; our guide to repotting indoor plants details every step.
The oldest leaves at the base naturally turn yellow from time to time: cut them off flush with the stem; this is the rosette's normal renewal process.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its glossy, solid-green foliage provides a calm backdrop for more graphic plants. If you're still hesitating between two classic large plants, our philodendron or monstera comparison will help you choose.
- For a jungle corner with height, pair it with a Strelitzia reginae - its long, fan-shaped upright leaves add verticality behind the rosette.
- For a contrast of patterns, place a Calathea Orbifolia at its base - its round, silver-striped leaves stand out against the philodendron's solid green.
- For a graphic touch, add an Alocasia zebrina — its striped stems and arrow-shaped leaves complement the large oval leaves.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Elho Brussels Round anthracite decorative pot in Ø25 cm — its dark shade makes the glossy green foliage stand out.
Placed on the floor, raise it onto a stool or plant stand: the rosette will be at sofa height and enhance the room more effectively.
Verdeia tips
- Leave the aerial roots: a few brown roots may emerge from the central stem. They do not bother the plant; simply guide them toward the potting soil rather than cutting them off.
- Slow down in winter: with less light, the plant grows little and drinks less. Space out waterings and stop fertilizing from October to March, as our 5 tips for indoor plants in winter remind us.
- Wear gloves when pruning: the sap may irritate the skin. Cut off damaged leaves with clean pruning shears and wash your hands afterward.
