Frequently Asked Questions
Does Philodendron gloriosum need a support? No, it is a creeping rather than climbing philodendron: it grows horizontally across the potting soil. A wide, shallow pot suits it better than a moss pole.
How large do Philodendron gloriosum leaves grow? On a mature, well-established plant, each leaf can exceed 30 cm in length indoors, and each new leaf is generally a little larger than the previous one.

💚 Velvety heart-shaped leaves • 🤍 Contrasting cream veins • 🌱 Creeping rhizome • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • ⛅ Bright light without direct sun • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Philodendron gloriosum has large heart-shaped leaves with a velvety texture, dark green crossed by very distinct cream veins. Each new leaf emerges pale, almost pinkish, then darkens over a few weeks. Native to the humid forests of Colombia, it is one of the philodendrons most sought after by collectors.
Unlike most philodendrons, it does not climb: its thick stem, the rhizome, creeps along the surface of the potting soil and produces one leaf after another towards the front. It should therefore be grown in a wide rather than tall pot, without a support.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The philodendrons in the catalogue, depending on the foliage you are looking for:
- Philodendron gloriosum (this plant) — large, velvety heart-shaped leaves with cream veins and a trailing habit. The most graphic choice for foliage enthusiasts.
- Philodendron Green Princess — glossy, bright green leaves with a compact, dense habit. The easiest choice for beginners.
- Philodendron White Princess — dark green leaves variegated with white. For marbled foliage.
- Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' — coppery orange young leaves that turn green with age. For a touch of warm colour.
- Philodendron Selloum 'Atom' — wavy, deeply cut leaves and a clumping habit. For a compact jungle effect.
Gloriosum stands out to the touch: its leaves are matte and soft like velvet, whereas most philodendrons have smooth, glossy foliage.
Light & placement
In its native habitat, it grows on the ground in the light shade of tall trees. At home, it needs bright but filtered light, stable warmth and air that is not too dry - a balance explained in detail in our light and humidity guide.
- Light: bright and indirect, 1 to 2 metres from an east- or west-facing window; direct sun scorches the velvety leaves.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- Humidity: ideally above 60%, making a bright bathroom or a corner with grouped plants a good location.
- To avoid: radiators, cold drafts, and open windows in winter.
The rhizome always grows in the same direction: position the plant so that it grows toward the center of the pot, not against the edge.
Watering & care
Its rhizome, resting on the surface, is more sensitive to excess water than to drought. Leaves that turn yellow from the bottom often indicate that the potting soil has remained waterlogged, as explained in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate — when the top 2 to 3 centimeters of potting soil are dry; water less often in winter.
- Water: at room temperature, preferably low in limescale or rainwater.
- Fertilizer: diluted fertilizer for green plants, once a month from spring through the end of summer.
- Substrate: very airy, a mixture of potting soil, pine bark, and perlite.
- Repotting: in spring, into a pot that is wider than it is tall, leaving the rhizome resting on the surface, never buried. Our guide to repotting houseplants explains each step.
Rather than misting, which leaves light spots on the velvety foliage, place the pot on a saucer filled with damp clay pebbles, ensuring that the bottom of the pot does not touch the water.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its dark foliage and graphic veins make it the centerpiece of a tropical arrangement. Grouped with other plants, it also benefits from the humidity they release, a tip featured in our advice on rare and unusual plants.
- For a velvet duo, pair it with Calathea warscewiczii — the same velvety foliage, but with long upright leaves and purple undersides.
- To play with the veining, place an Alocasia Polly beside it — its arrow-shaped leaves with white veins echo the gloriosum’s hearts.
- For a foliage carpet in the foreground, add a Maranta 'Fascinator' — its low leaves, veined with red, dress the base of the arrangement.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Elho Brussels Round anthracite decorative pot — its dark color makes the cream-colored veins stand out.
Place it at eye level, on a shelf or a low piece of furniture: its leaves are best appreciated from the front, when the light glides across the velvety surface.
Verdeia tips
- Do not cut the rhizome too soon: each segment bears roots and a leaf. If it reaches the edge of the pot, give it a longer or rectangular container rather than trimming it.
- Dust with a soft brush: the velvety surface traps dust, and rubbing it too hard with a damp cloth can damage it. A dry brush or a gentle breath is enough.
- Be patient with new leaves: a leaf takes several weeks to unfurl and darken. Do not touch it while it is pale and fragile; in winter, our 5 steps for indoor plants in winter help it keep growing steadily.
