🌿 Leaves divided into lobes • 💚 Glossy dark green • 🪴 Dense, compact and rounded clump • 🌱 No stake needed • ⛅ Bright light or partial shade • 👍 Very easy • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Philodendron 'Xanadu' forms a dense, rounded clump of numerous glossy, dark green leaves divided into narrow lobes. Selected in the 1980s from a philodendron from the forests of Brazil, it has become one of the most cultivated philodendrons for its regular shape and ease of care.
It does not climb: all its leaves emerge from the base and fill out into a bush, becoming wider than tall over the years. With around twenty leaves upon delivery, it is one of the large indoor plants that instantly dress up a corner of a room.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The split-leaf philodendrons in the catalogue, according to the desired silhouette:
- Philodendron 'Xanadu' (this plant) — numerous leaves with narrow lobes, a compact and rounded clump, H60 cm. The densest and most regular.
- Philodendron 'Lickety Split' — broad, rounded leaves divided into numerous lobes, H70 cm. For larger leaves.
- Philodendron lacerum — long, pointed leaves with jagged edges, spreading growth, H65 cm. The most original.
- Philodendron Selloum 'Atom' — small, wavy and curly leaves, H25 cm. The mini version for a shelf.
Its split leaves are often mistaken for those of a monstera: our philodendron or monstera comparison explains the difference.
Light & placement
Xanadu is one of the most light-tolerant philodendrons: it accepts a little gentle morning sun and also does well in bright partial shade. It stays most compact in bright light.
- Light: bright and indirect, gentle morning sun tolerated, partial shade tolerated; avoid direct afternoon sun.
- Location: living room, office, bright entrance, near an east- or west-facing window.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- To avoid: radiators, air conditioning directed at the plant, and cold draughts.
In insufficient light, its petioles become elongated and the clump opens up: move it closer to a window so it can regain a compact shape.
Watering & care
It tolerates a missed watering well, but is much less tolerant of waterlogged potting soil. Lower leaves turning yellow generally indicate overwatering, as explained in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate - when the first 3 to 4 centimetres of potting soil are dry, about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
- Water: at room temperature; empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for green plants, once a month from spring to the end of summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every three or four weeks to keep them shiny.
- Repotting: every two to three years in spring, in a pot 3 to 5 cm wider; follow our guide to repotting indoor plants.
An overly wide clump can easily be divided when repotting: separate the root ball into two and repot each half to obtain two plants.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its dense, even clump provides a green foundation for an arrangement, complemented by taller or more colourful plants, as suggested in our complete philodendron guide.
- To add height, place a Pachira aquatica multi-troncs behind it - its braided trunks and hand-shaped leaves tower over the Xanadu's rounded clump.
- For a contrast of patterns, pair it with a Calathea Orbifolia - its large, round, silver-striped leaves stand out beside the split lobes.
- To brighten the arrangement, add an Aglaonema 'Stripes' — its silver-striped leaves bring lightness to the philodendron's dark green foliage.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Elho Brussels Round anthracite decorative pot in Ø25 cm — its simple, rounded shape complements the plant's ball-like silhouette.
Placed on the floor beside a sofa or in a corner, its rounded clump fills the space without overwhelming it.
Verdeia tips
- Rotate the pot every month: a regular quarter turn keeps the clump round, as the leaves always turn toward the window.
- Remove the lower leaves: when a lower leaf turns yellow, cut its petiole at the base. The clump stays neat and air circulates better through the heart of the plant.
- Slow down in winter: space out waterings and stop fertilizing from October to March, as explained in our 5 steps for helping indoor plants survive and even thrive during the cold months.
