Frequently Asked Questions
Does Philodendron lacerum need a support? Not at first: it grows in a clump in its pot. As it grows, some stems lengthen and can be guided up a moss pole, resulting in larger leaves.
What is the difference between Philodendron lacerum and Philodendron Lickety Split? Lacerum has long, pointed, spear-shaped leaves with jagged edges and a spreading habit, while Lickety Split has broad, rounded leaves divided into numerous lobes, forming a denser clump.

🌿 Long, spear-shaped leaves • ✂️ Edges divided into strips • 💚 Bright green • 🪴 Airy clump on long petioles • ⛅ Bright light or partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Philodendron lacerum bears long, pointed, spear-shaped leaves whose edges are divided into irregular strips: its Latin name lacerum means "torn." Native to the forests of the Greater Antilles, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola, it is still an uncommon philodendron in garden centers.
Its leaves unfold horizontally at the end of long petioles, forming an airy, spreading clump that fills the space without weighing it down. In nature, it climbs along trunks; in a pot, it grows as a clump and can climb a moss pole as it grows.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The catalog's split-leaf philodendrons, according to the desired shape:
- Philodendron lacerum (this plant) - long, pointed leaves with lacerated edges, spreading clump, H65 cm. The most unusual and airy.
- Philodendron 'Lickety Split' - large, rounded leaves divided into numerous lobes, dense clump, H70 cm. The fullest.
- Philodendron Pedatum - finely divided leaves, climbing habit on a support, H130 cm. The tallest version.
- Philodendron Selloum 'Atom' - small, wavy and curly leaves, compact habit, H25 cm. The mini version for a shelf.

Exposure & placement
Philodendron lacerum grows in the tropical understory: it likes abundant but filtered light, stable warmth, and air that is not too dry - a balance detailed in our light and humidity guide.
- Light: bright and indirect, 1 or 2 meters from a window; partial shade tolerated; avoid direct afternoon sun.
- Location: living room, office, on a low piece of furniture or on the floor, with space on the sides.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- Avoid: radiators, air conditioning directed at the plant, and cold draughts.
Allow it around 70 cm of width: its petioles spread horizontally and its leaves need air to unfurl without rubbing against a wall and creasing.
Watering & care
Like most philodendrons, it prefers potting soil that dries out slightly between waterings rather than a pot that is constantly waterlogged. Lower leaves turning yellow often indicate overwatering, as explained in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate — when the first 3 centimetres of potting soil are dry, about once a week in summer and every two weeks in winter.
- Water: at room temperature; empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for green plants, once a month from spring to the end of summer.
- Humidity: normal household air is sufficient; higher humidity produces larger, more deeply cut leaves.
- Repotting: every two years in spring, in a pot 3 to 5 cm wider and well-draining potting soil; follow our guide to repotting houseplants.
The older leaves at the base occasionally turn yellow: cut them off at the base to keep the clump neat.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its spreading shape and strap-like leaves add movement to a plant corner, paired with more compact or colourful foliage, as suggested in our complete philodendron guide.
- For a touch of colour, pair it with an Anthurium Red — its bright red flowers stand out against the vivid green of the cut leaves.
- For a contrast of patterns, place a Calathea Ornata beside it — its fine pink stripes on dark leaves echo the lacerum's straps.
- To contrast the shapes, add a Philodendron 'Imperial Green' — its large, full, glossy leaves highlight the cuts of the lacerum.
- To enhance the pot, choose the white Elho Vibes Fold Ø22 cm decorative pot — its white color and facets lighten the base and highlight the green foliage.
Placed on a low piece of furniture, it drapes slightly over the sides: its strap-like leaves are best viewed from slightly above.
Verdeia tips
- Give it a moss pole if it becomes elongated: as they grow, some stems stretch out and look for support. Loosely tie them to a stake: the new leaves will then become larger and more deeply cut.
- Turn the pot every month: the petioles grow toward the light. A regular quarter-turn prevents the clump from leaning to one side.
- Slow down in winter: space out waterings and stop fertilizing from October to March, as explained in our 5 steps for helping indoor plants survive and even thrive during the cold months.
