Sarracenia — Pitcher carnivorous plant — Ø12 cm — H20 cm
🌿 Spectacular and colorful pitchers • ☀️ Full sun to bright light • 💧 Regular watering • 🦟 Fascinating carnivore • 🌟 Unique and graphic plant
The Sarracenia, also known as the Trumpet Plant, is a spectacular carnivorous plant native to North America, known for its fascinating tubular pitchers that capture insects. This extraordinary plant features trumpet-shaped modified leaves, often adorned with red or purple veins, which attract, trap, and digest insects to supplement their diet.
Native to the bogs and swamps of North America, the Sarracenia is a carnivorous plant adapted to nutrient-poor soils. Its spectacular pitchers are true sophisticated traps: they secrete a sweet nectar at the rim of the opening to attract insects, which then slip inside where downward-pointing hairs prevent them from climbing back out. Digestive enzymes at the bottom of the pitcher break down the prey to feed the plant. With its current height of 20 cm and pot diameter of 12 cm, it becomes a fascinating and educational carnivorous plant in your urban jungle, perfect for nature enthusiasts and collectors of unusual plants.
Exposure & placement
The Sarracenia needs plenty of light to thrive and develop its spectacular colors. Unlike most houseplants, it tolerates and even enjoys direct sunlight.
- Exposure: full sun to very bright indirect light, minimum 4-6 hours of sun per day.
- Ideal: south-facing windowsill, conservatory, greenhouse, balcony, or terrace outdoors from spring to autumn.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C during growth, requires a cool winter rest (5-10 °C).
- Substrate: special carnivorous plant mix (blonde peat + perlite or non-calcareous sand), never regular potting soil.
Verdeia tip: the more sun it receives, the more its pitchers will develop spectacular red and purple colors.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular and abundant — the substrate must remain constantly moist, never dry.
- Method: place the pot in a saucer always filled with 2-3 cm of water (bottom watering).
- Water quality: CRUCIAL — use only rainwater, demineralized water, or reverse osmosis water. Never hard tap water.
- Frequency: keep the saucer always filled with water in spring-summer, reduce slightly in winter.
- Humidity: prefers 50-70% humidity.
- Fertilizer: NEVER — the plant feeds on insects, fertilizer would kill it.
- Winter rest: essential — place it in a cool spot (5-10 °C) for 3-4 months in winter, reduce watering but keep the substrate moist.
- Size: cut dead or browned pitchers at the base in spring.
Important: never feed your carnivorous plant — it catches its prey on its own. Feeding it can cause it to rot.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its spectacular and colorful pitchers, the Sarracenia instantly becomes a fascinating curiosity piece. This carnivorous plant attracts attention and amazes all visitors.
- To pair with: other carnivorous plants (Venus flytrap, Sundew, Nepenthes), bog plants, or alone to highlight its unique character.
- Ideal pot: unperforated plastic pot with a deep saucer, or open terrarium to recreate a bog-like environment.
- Atmosphere: perfect on a very bright windowsill, in a conservatory, an open terrarium, or outdoors from spring to autumn.
Place it in a very bright spot where you can watch insects get captured — a fascinating natural spectacle.
Verdeia Tips
- Fascinating but demanding plant — requires specific conditions to thrive.
- Lots of direct light — it is a full sun plant.
- Rainwater or demineralized water REQUIRED — tap water with lime kills it.
- Substrate always moist — use the saucer filled with water method.
- Winter dormancy essential — place it in a cool spot (5-10 °C) for 3-4 months.
- Never fertilize — it feeds naturally on insects.
- Do not touch the inside of the urns — this can damage them.
- Educational plant — perfect for observing nature and understanding plant adaptations.
- Non-toxic — safe for children and pets (but can trap small household insects).
