Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the fronds of an Asparagus Sprengeri turn yellow? It is almost always related to air that is too dry, lack of light, or insufficient watering in summer — mist regularly, keep the soil slightly moist, and remove yellowed stems at the base to encourage new growth.
Can Asparagus Sprengeri grow hanging? Yes, it is actually its ideal growing method — its thin, flexible stems naturally cascade very densely and generously, a particularly spectacular effect when hung in macramé near a bright window.

🌿 Fine, soft green cascading foliage • 🪴 Airy, lightweight cascade • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri', also known as ornamental asparagus, is a cascading tropical plant native to South Africa. Its slender, flexible stems are covered in light, dense foliage that cascades in an airy display - a soft, natural sense of volume that few trailing plants can reproduce with the same combination of lightness and density.
Hardy and easy to care for, it is one of the most versatile decorative trailing plants in the catalogue, alongside the other Asparagus varieties in the range.
Which trailing Asparagus should you choose?
Verdeia's Asparagus range offers three very distinct silhouettes:
- Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri' (this plant) - slender, flexible stems covered in very dense foliage that cascades generously, with a broad, airy habit. The most trailing and voluminous variety in the range.
- Asparagus densiflorus 'Meyers' - upright stems shaped like thick, dense plumes, with an architectural, vertical habit. The choice for a structured, upright effect rather than a trailing one.
- Asparagus setaceus - very fine, feathery light green foliage, initially upright before becoming trailing. The most delicate and airy variety in the range, with almost transparent foliage.
Light & placement
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' thrives in bright indirect light - this is essential for maintaining dense foliage with a vibrant green colour. It is one of the trailing plants best suited to hanging planters and high shelves in a bright interior.
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade - protected from direct sun, which dries out and yellows the fine fronds.
- Locations: living room, kitchen, office, bright bathroom - in a hanging planter or on a high shelf to let the stems trail freely.
- Ideal: near an east- or north-facing window - gentle morning light is perfect for preserving the brightness of the fine foliage.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, protected from cold draughts.
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' likes stability - avoid moving it frequently and choose its permanent location as soon as you install it to preserve harmonious growth.
Watering & care
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' is tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture - its fleshy rhizome stores water and allows it to withstand dry periods without immediate damage. The principles of proper watering for tropical plants apply fully here.
- Frequency: approximately once a week - water when the surface of the substrate is dry.
- In summer: increase the frequency if the air is hot or dry.
- In winter: reduce watering and move the plant away from direct heat sources.
- Humidity: mist the foliage to prevent dry tips and recreate its original tropical atmosphere.
- Fertiliser: apply a gentle liquid fertiliser every 3 to 4 weeks in spring and summer.
Cut completely yellowed stems off at the base - they will never turn green again and use up energy needed by healthy stems. Regular pruning encourages the growth of denser new shoots.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
The light, generous cascade of Asparagus 'Sprengeri' brings a soft, natural sense of volume that few trailing plants can reproduce - it pairs perfectly with more graphic foliage, between hanging plants and large plants.
- In a macramé hanging planter in a bright living room, pair Asparagus 'Sprengeri' with Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' - the dense, light cascade of the Asparagus contrasts with the Scindapsus's finer stems and satin-like silver markings for a highly graphic, complementary hanging arrangement.
- As a duo on a high shelf, pair it with Philodendron scandens - the Asparagus's very fine, airy foliage contrasts with the Philodendron's broader, glossy heart-shaped leaves for a beautifully balanced trailing plant arrangement combining lightness and volume.
- For a trailing plant arrangement in the bathroom, pair it with a Nephrolepis Green Lady - the two fine green foliage types create a highly harmonious combination that is perfectly suited to the ambient humidity of this space.
- In a matte white ceramic decorative pot or natural macramé, the soft, organic materials naturally complement the lightness of the foliage - choose a hanging decorative pot that lets the stems trail freely on all sides for a maximum cascading effect.
Verdeia tips
- Mist all year round, especially indoors with heating: Asparagus 'Sprengeri' is sensitive to the dry air in heated homes during winter - misting 2 to 3 times a week helps prevent browning at the tips of the fronds and keeps the foliage dense and green.
- Repot every 2 years in spring in a well-draining substrate: the Asparagus rhizome gradually grows and eventually fills the pot - a substrate made from universal potting soil and perlite, with a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom, ensures optimal drainage.
- Avoid moving it frequently: unlike most trailing plants, Asparagus 'Sprengeri' acclimatises slowly to changes in exposure - each move causes slight temporary yellowing of the foliage, which disappears within a few weeks if the new conditions are favourable.
