Frequently asked questions
Why do the leaves of a Croton fall off? It is almost always a shock — moving, draft, sudden temperature change, or overwatering. Choose the final location upon receipt and stabilize the conditions so the plant can rebalance.
How to keep the bright colors of a Croton Mrs. Iceton? Place it in a very bright spot with a few hours of gentle morning sun — the stronger the light, the more intense the pink and red shades, while a too dark location gradually makes the foliage turn green again.

🎨 Bright green and yellow bicolored foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌿 Develops pink and red tones with age • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' is a tropical shrub with spectacular foliage. Its large, oval, leathery leaves combine dark green and bright yellow in unique proportions on each leaf. Its distinctive feature: the foliage changes with age and light — the green and yellow leaves gradually develop more intense pink and red tones over the months, visually transforming the plant over time.
Native to the tropical forests of Malaysia and the Pacific Islands, it is part of the extensive range of Crotons in the catalog — one of the most colorful families of our houseplants. Like all Crotons, it is sensitive to changes in location — choose its permanent spot upon arrival and place it somewhere bright and stable.
Which Croton variety should you choose?
Each Croton stands out through the shape of its leaves and its color palette. Here is how 'Mrs. Iceton' compares within the range:
- Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' (this plant) — large oval dark green leaves with bright yellow coloring that gradually develop pink and red tones as the plant matures and receives light. The brightest and most dynamic.
- Croton 'Petra' — broad, oblong, dark green leaves veined with yellow, orange, and red, with a robust, structured growth habit. The most classic and contrasting.
- Croton 'Mammi' — slender, slightly wavy leaves with colorful veins and a very upright growth habit. The most graphic with its elongated shape.
- Croton 'Wilma' — broad leaves dominated by warm yellow and orange tones, with a compact, dense growth habit. The warmest in color.
- Croton 'Dreadlock' — long, multicolored corkscrew-shaped leaves with a spiral form and a highly original silhouette. The most unusual and sculptural.
- Croton 'Sunny Star' — dark green leaves speckled with bright yellow, with a compact habit. The most graphic variety with contrasting speckling.
'Mrs. Iceton' has green and yellow foliage when sold that develops pink and red shades with age and good light — a plant that visually transforms over several months.
Exposure & placement
The Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' needs bright light to maintain the intensity of its colors — in insufficient light, the leaves gradually turn green and lose their characteristic pink and red shades. It is one of the Crotons that tolerates a few hours of gentle direct sun best, in the morning or late afternoon, which further enhances its palette.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light with a few hours of gentle sun — east- or west-facing window, very bright living room.
- Avoid: intense direct afternoon sun that scorches the leaves, partial shade that fades the colors, drafts, and frequent moves.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C, minimum 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
The stronger the light, the more the leaves develop their intense pink and red shades — an east-facing window with morning sun is the ideal spot to reveal the full palette of Mrs. Iceton.
Watering & care
Croton is sensitive to both extremes — neither too dry nor too wet. Leaf drop is almost always a sign of stress: being moved, drafts, overwatering, or underwatering. The finger method helps establish the right rhythm, while yellowing leaves indicate weakened foliage.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become waterlogged.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer; space out watering in winter.
- Water: at room temperature, preferably low in limescale.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — the Croton appreciates ambient humidity of 60–70%.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory; empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants every 2 weeks in spring and summer.
If the lower leaves fall one after another, it is almost always due to shock — moving the plant, a draft, or a sudden change in temperature. Stabilize the conditions and the plant will rebalance within a few weeks.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
The multicolored foliage of Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' is expressive enough to serve as a focal point on its own — it does not need to be accompanied to create a strong visual impact. To build an arrangement around it, use it as the cornerstone of a tropical setting.
- With a simple green backdrop: pair it with a Ficus Elastica Robusta with large, solid deep-green leaves — the Ficus's understated foliage provides a neutral backdrop that makes the Croton's color complexity stand out even more.
- In a warm tropical arrangement: pair it with an Areca Palm for a very tropical duo — the Areca's fine, lightweight leaves contrast with the Croton's large, thick, colorful leaves.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the pink and yellow shades of the foliage pair well with a yellow amber Jazz decorative pot — the warm tone of the ceramic echoes the yellow areas of the foliage without competing with the pink ones.
- In a bright office: its well-structured form at H65 cm makes it ideal for a very bright office corner — place it in a natural Selin basket whose light-colored fibers create a warm dialogue with the yellow and pink tones of the foliage.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its permanent location upon delivery: Croton is among the plants most sensitive to being moved — each change of location can trigger significant leaf drop, which may last several weeks before the plant stabilizes.
- Mist the foliage regularly: Croton is particularly sensitive to the dry air from indoor heating in winter, which encourages red spider mites — misting 2 to 3 times a week effectively prevents these pests while maintaining the foliage's vibrancy.
- Observe the foliage's evolution: the yellow-green new leaves that emerge at the top and gradually develop pink and red tones as they descend toward the base are part of this variety's character — each leaf follows its own color evolution independently of the others.
The Croton Mrs. Iceton produces irritating white latex when pruning or cutting the stems — wear gloves and avoid contact with the eyes. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
