Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a Ficus Elastica losing its leaves? It is almost always related to being moved, overwatering, or a draft — choose its permanent spot upon arrival and avoid moving it once placed.
What is the difference between the Ficus Elastica Tineke and the Belize? The Tineke has a softer tricolor variegation with subtle cream and powder pink tones, while the Belize shows more pronounced and vibrant pink tones — two complementary versions of the same variegation.

🌿 Cream, green, and pink variegated foliage • 🌤️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
The Ficus Elastica Tineke, also known as the Variegated Rubber Plant, is an architectural houseplant with large, glossy, leathery leaves featuring tricolor marbling - cream, soft green, and powder pink - that evolves with each new shoot. Its slender form and luminous foliage make it a striking botanical centerpiece in its own right.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and India, it belongs to the Ficus Elastica collection, in which Tineke stands out for its softest and brightest tricolor variegation. Its structured silhouette naturally makes it one of the standout plants in our large indoor plant selection.
Which Ficus Elastica variety should you choose?
The Ficus Elastica genus includes several varieties with very distinct colors and characteristics. Here is how Tineke compares:
- Ficus Elastica Tineke (this plant) - tricolor variegation in cream, soft green, and powder pink, with soft, luminous tones. The most refined.
- Ficus Elastica Belize - pink, cream, and green variegation, with more pronounced and vibrant pink tones. The most colorful.
- Ficus Elastica Robusta - uniform dark green foliage, classic and robust, in a large format. The most understated and structurally striking.
- Ficus Elastica Abidjan - dark green foliage with a burgundy-red central vein. The most graphic in dark tones.
Tineke is the only Ficus Elastica to combine cream, green, and pink tones in soft variegation - more subtle than Belize, brighter than Robusta or Abidjan.
Light & placement
The Ficus Elastica Tineke needs plenty of light to maintain the intensity of its variegation - in insufficient light, new leaves gradually grow greener and lose their cream and pink tones. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity indoors.
- Ideal placement: bright indirect light - less than 2 m from a large, outward-facing window.
- Tolerates: a few hours of gentle morning sun, light partial shade.
- To avoid: direct afternoon sun, which scorches and fades the variegation.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, tolerates moderate fluctuations.
- Substrate: light and well-draining - universal potting soil with perlite.
Every plant is unique: the intensity of the cream and pink variegation naturally varies according to the light received and the age of the leaves.
Watering & care
Ficus Elastica prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered - yellowing and leaf drop are almost always linked to excessive watering. Check with the finger test: water only when the first 3 to 5 centimetres of substrate are dry.
- Watering: moderate - let the top 3–5 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer; every 2 weeks in winter.
- Water: water at room temperature.
- Drainage: essential - a pot with drainage holes is mandatory, and the saucer must be emptied after watering.
- Fertiliser: liquid fertiliser for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
Every plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies according to pot size, room temperature, and the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The cream and powder-pink tones of the Ficus Elastica Tineke bring a soft botanical glow that few large plants can offer. A reliable choice among large indoor plants for structuring a room.
- As a centrepiece in a living room: the H100 cm format makes a statement on its own in a corner - place it in a natural Selin basket whose light fibres naturally complement the cream and pink tones of the foliage.
- In a bright tropical arrangement: pair it with a Strelitzia and a Monstera for an architectural trio - the Tineke brings brightness, the Strelitzia verticality, and the Monstera graphic foliage.
- Colour contrast: pair it with Ficus Elastica Abidjan to play with two extremes — Tineke's light pink variegation against Abidjan's very dark green leaves with burgundy veins.
- Decorative pot and colour scheme: the cream and pink tones stand out particularly well against a white Brussels decorative pot — a luminous harmony that enhances the softness of the tricolour variegation.
Verdeia tips
- Choose its permanent position upon arrival: Ficus Elastica is sensitive to being moved — each change of position may cause temporary leaf drop, especially during the first few weeks after delivery.
- Wipe the large leaves regularly: the leathery, glossy leaves collect dust that dulls the cream and pink variegation — a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to preserve their full shine.
- Turn the pot a quarter turn every month: Ficus naturally grows towards the light — regular rotation ensures a balanced silhouette from all sides and prevents asymmetrical growth.
