Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the water in my hydroponic plant turn green or cloudy? Green water indicates algae growth, almost always caused by too much light exposure — direct sunlight is the main culprit. Change the water immediately, clean the jar, and move the plant to a spot with indirect light and no direct exposure.
Can a soil plant be converted to hydroponic growing? Yes, but it’s a delicate process that requires patience. You need to carefully rinse all the roots to remove any substrate residue, then place the plant in water, changing it very frequently during the first weeks. Native hydroponic plants like this Clusia are already adapted and acclimate without stress.

🌿 Hydroponic Clusia • 💧 Roots visible in the water • ☀️ Indirect light • 🔄 Regular water changes • 🎁 Ready to give • 📏 H30 cm | Jar Ø12 cm
The Clusia en bocal cylindre is an elegant hydroponic plant presented in an open, transparent cylindrical glass jar. Clusia rosea, also known as the Autograph tree, is a tropical plant native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, known for its glossy, dark green, fleshy leaves and remarkable resilience. Its roots grow directly in water, visible through the glass — a fascinating decorative effect that is just as captivating as the foliage itself.
No soil, no growing medium, simplified care. Ready to display, ready to give. A lovely idea among plant gifts and unusual plants.
Why choose a hydroponic plant in a vase?
Hydroponic cultivation in an open vase offers several practical advantages over traditional soil cultivation:
- Simplified care: no potting soil to manage, no repotting — simply maintain the water level and refresh it regularly.
- Clean and mess-free: no risk of spilling soil, perfect for offices and polished spaces.
- Spectacular visual effect: the roots growing in the water create a double decorative effect — foliage above, roots below.
- Fewer pests: the absence of soil significantly reduces the risk of gnats and other soil pests.
Hydroponic cultivation in an open vase is ideal for offices and polished living spaces — no soil to handle, no risk of spills.
Light & placement
Clusia en bocal cylindre thrives in bright indirect light — avoid direct sun, which overheats the water, encourages algae growth, and can burn the leaves.
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun.
- Ideal: office, shelf, bedside table, living room, kitchen, or bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
A bright spot without direct sun keeps the water clear for longer and the white roots visible — direct sun turns the water green within a few days.
Watering & care
Caring for a Clusia in hydroponics is simple: maintain a constant water level and replace the water regularly to prevent stagnation.
- Water level: keep the water at approximately 1/3 of the jar's height — the roots should not be completely submerged to allow oxygenation.
- Replacement: change the water every 2 to 3 weeks with room-temperature water.
- Type of water: filtered water, rainwater, or tap water left to stand for 24 hours to remove chlorine.
- Fertilizer: add a few drops of highly diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants when changing the water, once a month.
- Cleaning: gently rinse the jar and roots whenever you change the water to prevent algae.
If the water becomes cloudy or green, change it immediately and rinse the jar — this is a sign that algae are beginning to grow, often caused by too much direct light.
Decor ideas & pairings
Its sleek cylindrical jar and visible roots make it an elegant botanical decor piece — just as attractive on its own as arranged with other hydroponic plants.
- As a composition: pair it with the Monstera + Clusia duo in cylinders for a pre-assembled hydroponic arrangement, or create your own collection with the hydroponic trio in bottles with wooden bases.
- Other Clusia formats: discover the Clusia cylinder with stopper for an airtight version, or the Clusia Kingston with LED for a luminous version in the same format.
- As a gift: its refined presentation and easy care make it an elegant, long-lasting plant gift.
Verdeia tips
- Do not fill the jar completely - keep the water at approximately 1/3 of the height. The roots need an aerated area above the water level to absorb oxygen. Roots that remain completely submerged eventually rot, even in hydroponics.
- Change the water regularly - every 2 to 3 weeks, completely empty the jar, rinse it and the roots with fresh water, then refill it. Stagnant water allows bacteria to develop, damaging the roots and causing unpleasant odors.
- Brown roots are normal - immersed roots naturally turn brown over time. As long as the leaves remain vigorous, there is no cause for concern. Black, soft roots, on the other hand, indicate water that is too stagnant.
- Non-toxic - Clusia poses no risk to cats, dogs, or children, making it an ideal option for households with pets looking for a decorative, low-maintenance hydroponic plant.
