Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the trunk of my Brighamia insignis softening? A softening trunk is almost always a sign of overwatering or collar rot — immediately reduce watering, check drainage, and always empty the saucer after each watering.
Is Brighamia insignis really threatened in the wild? Yes — it is classified as critically endangered in its natural habitat on Hawaiian cliffs, making it a collector’s plant with high botanical heritage value.

🌤️ Partial shade / Bright interior • 🌺 Fragrant autumn flowering • 🌿 Sculptural fleshy trunk • 📏 H37 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Brighamia insignis, nicknamed the Hawaiian palm, is a fascinating and rare succulent native to the volcanic cliffs of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau - a species now threatened in its natural habitat. Its column-shaped fleshy trunk and rosette of bright green leaves give it an immediately recognizable sculptural silhouette. A reliable choice among collector plants.
Its autumn flowering - small, delicately fragrant creamy-white flowers - is a rare indoor event that rewards the care provided throughout the year.
Light & placement
Brighamia insignis prefers bright but indirect light - on its native cliffs, it benefits from intense light often softened by coastal mists. A few hours of gentle sun are acceptable; prolonged direct sun dries out the trunk.
- Light: partial shade or bright interior - an east- or southeast-facing windowsill is ideal.
- Ideal for: bright living room, veranda, bright office, reading nook.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C, sheltered from cold drafts.
- Growing medium: light, sandy and very well-draining potting mix - cactus and succulent type.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - approximately every 10 to 12 days in summer; allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings. This minimal care makes it an ideal plant for a relaxing green nook.
- Drainage: essential - always empty the saucer after watering; crown rot is irreversible.
- Fertilizer: twice a month from spring to the end of summer, using diluted fertilizer for green plants - this stimulates autumn flowering.
- Winter dormancy: reduce watering significantly from October to February to respect its natural cycle.
- Pruning: unnecessary - simply remove yellowing leaves at the base of the trunk.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its sculptural silhouette stands perfectly well on its own - placed on a tall stand in a bright corner, it immediately becomes the room's focal point without any elaborate arrangement.
- For an exotic arrangement: pair it with a Zamioculcas and a Sansevieria Laurentii - three low-water plants, three distinct upright forms, and a cohesive arrangement without demanding maintenance.
- As a statement plant: place it alone on a light wood stool or plant stand - its columnar silhouette immediately draws the eye without competition.
- Decorative pot: matte ceramic or beige stoneware highlights the contrast between the fleshy trunk and bright green foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Respect its winter dormancy: drastically reduce watering from October to February - this period of relative dryness triggers autumn flowering. An overly wet winter can compromise flowering the following year.
- Avoid temperature shocks: Brighamia is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and drafts - choose its permanent location from the start and do not move it. These needs are easy to anticipate, as with all easy-care plants.
- Fertilize in summer for autumn flowers: applying fertilizer twice a month from June to August stimulates the formation of flower buds - without this nutrition, flowering is rare or may not occur at all.
