🌿 Air-purifying • ☀️ Bright indoor light / Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌴 Graphic & contemporary • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm • ⚠️ Slightly toxic to pets
Yucca elephantipes 'Tres Cañas', also known as three-stemmed Yucca, is a hardy tropical plant native to Mexico and Central America. Its three woody trunks, crowned with long, rigid leaves arranged in rosettes, give it an immediately recognizable sculptural silhouette - a strong botanical presence that structures a space as soon as it is placed there.
One of the most resilient indoor plants, it tolerates missed waterings, adapts to varying light levels, and helps purify the air. An architectural choice for living rooms, offices, and entryways seeking character - place it out of reach of pets and young children, as its pointed leaves can cause injury. Large indoor plants need a little space and distance to be properly showcased.
Light & placement
Yucca elephantipes is a sun-loving plant native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. Indoors, it thrives in bright light but knows how to adapt - one of its greatest strengths.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light, near a south- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: partial shade - but growth will be slower and the leaves less dense.
- To avoid: prolonged direct sun through a window, which can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, minimum 10 °C. Very sensitive to cold drafts.
- Substrate: well-draining - lightweight universal potting soil with 30% sand or perlite.
The brighter its location, the more evenly its three stems will develop. With less than 2 hours of light per day, it will survive but will hardly grow.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - wait until the top 5 centimetres of substrate are dry before watering.
- Frequency: approximately every 8–10 days in summer, every 3–4 weeks in winter.
- Water: preferably use low-limescale water (filtered or left to stand). The Yucca is sensitive to it.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory, and the saucer must always be emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: every 6–8 weeks in spring and summer, use green plant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring, in a slightly larger pot.
The Yucca stores the water in its trunks — this is its natural reserve. It is far better to underwater than overwater: the roots quickly rot in waterlogged soil. The first few days matter: a few simple steps can help you welcome a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its three trunks and architectural foliage, Yucca 'Tres Cañas' is above all a sculptural plant. It does not need to be surrounded by other plants to stand out — placed alone in a bright corner, it is enough to transform a room.
- As a standalone centerpiece: in a large polished concrete or matte ceramic pot, it makes a statement as a botanical work of art in a living room or entryway. A reliable choice among decorative foliage plants.
- As part of a composition: pair it with a Ficus lyrata or a Strelitzia for a contrast of shapes and heights. Add a Zamioculcas on the floor to fill out the base.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic, concrete, or natural terracotta — raw materials enhance its clean lines better than colorful or glossy pots.
- Style: perfect for a minimalist, Scandinavian, or urban jungle interior. Its three stems give it a volume that a single-stem plant cannot match.
Turn the pot a quarter turn each week: the three stems naturally grow toward the light, and this regular rotation ensures a balanced silhouette from every angle.
Verdeia Tips
- Never overwater — the trunks naturally store the water. Constantly damp soil causes the roots to rot without any visible signs until it is too late.
- Beware of limescale — white spots or gradual yellowing are often caused by tap water. Use filtered water or water that has been left to stand for 24 hours.
- Watch out for mealybugs — white, cottony filaments in the leaf axils? Treat immediately with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, then with diluted black soap.
- Remove yellowing lower leaves — this is natural. Cut them at the base with a clean motion: this gives the plant its characteristic palm-like appearance and encourages upward growth.
- Let it acclimatize after delivery — leave it for 48 hours in a room at a moderate temperature before placing it in its final location. Sudden changes from cold to heat can trigger leaf drop.
- ⚠️ Slightly toxic and sharp leaves — toxic if ingested by dogs and cats, and its tips can cause injury. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children. In a household with pets, it is better to choose from these pet-friendly plants.
