Frequently Asked Questions
Can the 'Reka' blueberry bush produce fruit on its own? Yes, it is a self-fertile variety — but having another blueberry variety nearby significantly improves the quantity and size of the fruit produced.
When to harvest blueberries from the 'Reka' blueberry bush? From June to August depending on exposure — the berries are ready when they turn deep purplish blue and easily detach from the stem without effort.

🫐 Blue-purple berries rich in antioxidants • 🌸 White spring blossoms • 🍂 Fiery autumn foliage • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø13 cm
The Vaccinium corymbosum 'Reka' is an organic blueberry bush from New Zealand horticultural selection, known for its high productivity and the intense flavor of its berries. An early and vigorous variety, it adapts perfectly to urban balconies and terraces in pots.
As decorative as it is generous — white bell-shaped flowers in spring, blue-purple berries from early summer, then fiery red foliage in autumn.
Exposure & Location
The 'Reka' blueberry bush prefers bright, airy spots. It thrives both in pots and in the ground, provided it has acidic soil — an absolutely essential condition for its growth and fruiting.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — more sun = more fruit.
- Soil: pure ericaceous soil or well-drained acidic mix, never calcareous.
- Pollination: self-fertile, but the presence of another variety significantly improves the harvest.
- Pot: minimum 25–30 cm diameter — renew ericaceous soil every 2 to 3 years.
Place it in the largest pot available on your terrace — a generous container directly improves the quantity and quality of fruit produced each summer.
Watering & Care
The blueberry bush likes constant freshness but hates stagnant water. It is particularly sensitive to lime — hard tap water gradually alkalizes the soil and causes leaf chlorosis. Always prefer rainwater or filtered water.
- Watering: regular with non-calcareous water — soil slightly moist at all times.
- Mulching: essential to retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.
- Pruning: light pruning after harvest — remove old branches to stimulate new fruiting shoots.
- Fertilizer: acidic organic amendment in spring to support flowering and fruiting.
Apply a 5 cm layer of pine mulch or wood chips at the base — pine naturally acidifies the soil as it decomposes and retains moisture between waterings.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
The 'Reka' blueberry bush charms with its triple ornamental value: white bell-shaped flowers in spring, berry production in summer, and fiery red foliage in autumn — three seasons of decoration for a single shrub.
- To double production, pair it with an organic raspberry 'Malling Promise' — both organic small fruits are harvested at slightly staggered times and complement each other perfectly in a sunny terrace vegetable garden corner.
- For a complete fruit terrace, the thornless blackberry 'Black Satin' organic is an ideal companion — its large sweet blackberries complement the blueberries for a varied harvest all summer long.
- For an organic edible composition, the self-fertile organic Kiwi 'Jenny' adds a climbing and graphic dimension to the terrace vegetable garden — its large leaves contrast with the compact, dense habit of the blueberry bush.
- To enrich the blueberry harvest, plant two blueberry bushes of different varieties — cross-pollination between compatible varieties significantly increases the volume and size of the fruit produced.
Verdeia Tips
- Water exclusively with non-calcareous water: hard tap water gradually alkalizes the soil and causes irreversible chlorosis — collect rainwater or use filtered water for every watering.
- Renew ericaceous soil every 2 to 3 years: the soil depletes and alkalizes progressively in pots — a spring repotting with fresh ericaceous soil and organic compost revives vigor and fruiting.
- Prune after each harvest, not before: remove branches that have already fruited in August-September — new shoots of the year will bear the next season’s fruit. An acidic organic amendment right after pruning restarts growth before winter.
