🌿 Soothing deep green foliage • 🌑 Excellent shade tolerance • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Aglaonema 'Green Lady', also called Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical plant native to the undergrowth of Southeast Asia. Its deep green foliage with subtle shades brings a simple, calming plant presence — without variegation or bright colors, it’s the most discreet and versatile version of the Aglaonema family.
It’s also the most shade-tolerant variety in our catalog — ideal for dark spaces where other decorative plants wouldn’t survive. It also helps purify the air. Note: toxic if ingested by pets.
Which Aglaonema variety to choose?
Aglaonemas are mainly distinguished by the color and intensity of their variegation. Here are the most distinct profiles from our collection:
- Aglaonema 'Green Lady' (this plant) — deep solid green foliage, very shade tolerant, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most understated and easiest.
- Aglaonema 'Jungle Silver' — large, highly contrasting silver areas. The most graphic in low light.
- Aglaonema Silver Bay — wide silver central stripe, elegant shape. The most classic with variegation.
- Aglaonema Spring Red — pink, red, and green foliage. The only warm-colored variety.
- Aglaonema B.J. Freedman — large dark green leaves, impressive size H70 cm. The bulkiest.
The Green Lady is the ideal variety if you’re looking for a simple green plant that fits into any style without ever dominating the space. Find all varieties in our full collection.
Exposure & location
The Aglaonema 'Green Lady' is the most low-light tolerant variety in the family — a rare quality for a plant of this size and form.
- Ideal exposure: low to moderate indirect light — spots away from windows, interior offices, hallways.
- Tolerates: relative shade and artificial light alone — one of the few decorative plants around 60 cm tall able to survive in these conditions.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns and discolors the leaves.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C — sensitive to cold. Growth stops below 15 °C.
- Soil: light universal potting mix with some perlite.
Unlike variegated varieties that need light to keep their patterns, the Green Lady maintains its deep green foliage even in the darkest spaces — this is its distinctive advantage.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 centimeters of soil dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in summer, every 10–14 days in winter.
- Water: room temperature water, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours if possible.
- Humidity: prefers 40–60% humidity — mist occasionally in very dry air.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine and promote photosynthesis.
Aglaonema easily forgives missed waterings — when in doubt, wait rather than water too much. Excess water is its main cause of decline.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Green Lady is a background plant — understated, structured, discreet. It enhances the more graphic plants placed beside it without ever competing with them.
- At the back of the arrangement: its deep solid green foliage highlights the variegated or colorful plants placed in front — Jungle Silver, Spring Red, or Calathea.
- In a dark corner: alone in a dimly lit spot, it brings a soft and structured plant presence where few plants would survive.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic in white, gray, or terracotta — neutral tones match its understated character without overpowering it.
Its deep green foliage fits absolutely every style — from minimalist to urban jungle — without ever clashing. This is its main decorative strength.
Verdeia advice
- Yellow leaves: usually overwatering — always empty the saucer after watering and let the soil dry out more. In pots, yellowing is almost always due to stagnant moisture.
- Brown tips: hard water or dry air — switch to filtered or rested water (24 h), and mist the foliage in very dry air. Excess fertilizer can also cause brown tips — always dilute to half strength.
- Protect from cold — growth stops and spots appear below 15 °C. Keep away from poorly insulated windows in winter.
- Slow growth in low light — this is normal. Below a certain light level, Aglaonema survives but barely grows. For active growth, move it closer to a light source.
- Repot in spring without urgency — Aglaonema prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots appear under the pot, every 2–3 years.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
