🌿 Graphic arrow-shaped leaves • 🎨 Glossy dark green with pronounced veins • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Alocasia Bambino Arrow is a compact tropical plant native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Its upright arrow-shaped leaves, glossy dark green with very pronounced light veins, give it a unique graphic and dynamic profile within the Alocasia family. Compact size H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm — perfect for a shelf or desk.
Demanding in terms of humidity, but highly decorative in a small space. Please note: toxic if ingested by pets.
Which Alocasia variety should you choose?
The Alocasia genus includes compact forms and large architectural varieties with very distinct foliage. Here are the most differentiated profiles:
- Alocasia Bambino Arrow (this plant) — glossy dark green arrow-shaped leaves, H40 cm | Pot Ø14. The most graphic and dynamic in a compact format.
- Alocasia Nebula Silver Compacta — metallic silver foliage with nebulous patterns, H30 cm | Pot Ø14. The most sophisticated.
- Alocasia Dragon Scale — textured leaves with silver and green dragon-scale patterns. The most textured and the rarest.
- Alocasia Red Secret — green foliage with copper-red undersides, H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm. The most colourful.
- Alocasia Macrorrhiza — very large heart-shaped leaves, imposing size H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The largest.
Other varieties of Alocasias are available — Cucullata, Wentii, Zebrina, Regal Shield and more.
Exposure & placement
The Alocasia Bambino Arrow needs bright indirect light to maintain its glossy foliage and contrasting veins — this is its main requirement.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window.
- Avoid: direct sun that burns the delicate leaves, excessive shade that causes the stems to become spindly and makes the veins disappear.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, with no sudden changes or drafts.
- Humidity: ideal ambient humidity of 60–80% — mist regularly or use a humidifier.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
Turn the plant a quarter turn every 2 weeks so that all the leaves receive the same amount of light and growth remains even.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 cm of the substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, less often in winter.
- Water: filtered water or water left to stand for 24 hours — limescale dulls the foliage and can burn sensitive roots.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly in dry conditions.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential — the roots rot quickly in waterlogged substrate.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
In winter, Alocasia may lose one or more leaves and enter dormancy — reduce watering and wait until spring. The plant will naturally start growing again with new leaves. The first few days matter: a few simple steps help you welcome a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its arrow-shaped, upright leaves create a dynamic vertical silhouette that contrasts effectively with round or trailing foliage.
- On a shelf or desk: in a matte white or terracotta ceramic pot, its upright leaves create an immediate graphic vertical accent.
- In a composition: pair it with a Calathea with round leaves or a trailing Pothos to play with contrasting shapes.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic — neutral tones enhance the glossy dark green without competing with it.
Its arrow-shaped leaves pointing upward create a sense of momentum and dynamism — an effective counterpoint to broad, spreading plants in a composition.
Verdeia Tips
- High humidity is essential — native to humid tropical undergrowth, it quickly suffers from the dry air of heated homes. Mist it 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby in winter.
- Winter dormancy is normal — one or more leaves may fall in winter. Reduce watering, maintain light levels, and wait for spring — it will naturally start growing again.
- Repot every year in spring — compact Alocasias grow relatively quickly. Annual repotting in a slightly larger pot maintains active growth.
- Avoid hard water — it can cause spots and dull the glossy foliage. Use filtered water or water that has been left to stand for 24 hours instead.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. In a household with animals, it is best to choose from the plants and animals that are compatible.
