Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the tips of a Dracaena's leaves turning brown? Brown tips usually indicate air that is too dry or watering with hard water — use filtered water and lightly mist the foliage if the air is dry.
Can Dracaena marginata grow in a low-light room? It tolerates partial shade but quickly loses its brightness and vigor — a well-lit room with indirect light is essential to maintain beautiful foliage.

🌿 Fine green and burgundy ribbon-like leaves • 🏛️ Slender, architectural silhouette • ☀️ Bright light • 💧 Infrequent watering • 🏙️ 4 sizes available
Dracaena marginata, or Madagascar Dragon Tree, is a graphic and slender plant native to East Africa and Madagascar. Its long dark green ribbon-like leaves, finely edged in burgundy red, rise in clusters from a knotted, branched trunk over the years — a sculptural silhouette that naturally structures large living spaces. It fits equally well in indoor jungle arrangements as in minimalist interiors.
Among large indoor plants, it is one of the easiest to care for.
Exposure & Location
Dracaena marginata thrives in bright to medium light. It adapts well to apartment living, even in less bright rooms, but its foliage loses some vibrancy and growth slows significantly in too dark conditions. To fully understand the balance of light and humidity for indoor plants, our guide details the needs by plant family.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — avoid direct sunlight which can burn leaf tips.
- Orientation: ideally east or west-facing window, or 1 to 2 meters back from a south-facing window.
- Location: living room, office, entryway — anywhere it can structure the space vertically.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C (64–81 °F), without cold drafts or near a fan heater.
Clean its long leaves with a damp cloth once a month — dust reduces photosynthesis and dulls the foliage’s shine.
Watering & Care
Dracaena marginata is forgiving of missed waterings but not of overwatering — too frequent watering is the main cause of decline. Let the soil dry out several centimeters before watering again. In winter, space watering even further apart. The most common watering mistakes are detailed in our complete guide.
- Frequency: every 10 to 15 days in summer, every 3 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never let the pot sit in water.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air better than most tropicals but appreciates occasional light misting if tips brown.
- Care: remove dry leaves at the base as they appear.
Brown tips almost always signal dry air or hard water — use filtered water or water left to sit for 24 hours before watering.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
The vertical and airy silhouette of Dracaena marginata makes it an ideal structural element in plant arrangements. Its knotted trunk and clusters of fine leaves create an architectural presence without visually weighing down the space.
- In a living room corner, place it in the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — the pot’s striated texture and neutral tone enhance the natural, graphic look of the trunk without competing with the burgundy foliage.
- Pair it with a Ficus Elastica Robusta — the Ficus’s large, dark glossy leaves contrast with the Dragon Tree’s fine ribbon-like leaves for a tropical composition balanced in texture and height.
- At its base, place a trailing Epipremnum Golden Pothos — the Pothos’s light green and yellow foliage on the floor creates a soft plant continuity beneath the Dragon Tree’s vertical form.
- Near a bay window, pair it with a Strelitzia Nicolai — two large plants with contrasting silhouettes (slender vs. broad and upright) for a striking XXL composition in a bright living room.
Dracaena marginata naturally branches over time — the older it gets, the more unique and sculptural its silhouette becomes. It is a plant that gains decorative value with age.
Verdeia Tips
- Let dry between waterings: insert your finger 3–4 cm into the soil — if it’s still moist, wait a few more days before watering.
- Rotate the pot a quarter turn every month: Dracaena always grows toward the light — regular rotation ensures balanced growth and prevents foliage from leaning to one side.
- Repot only when roots overflow: the Dragon Tree likes to be snug — repotting too early into a large pot encourages excess root moisture and risk of rot. See our guide on repotting indoor plants to choose the right time.
