Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Dracaena turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always due to overwatering or stagnant water. Reduce the watering frequency and make sure the pot is well-drained. Lower leaves yellowing individually is normal — it’s a natural renewal of the foliage.
Is the Dracaena Janet Lind toxic to pets? Yes, it contains irritating saponins and is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of your pets.

🌿 Shiny dark green foliage • 🏛️ Structured vertical form • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Minimal watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Dracaena Janet Lind, or Dragon Tree, is a tropical plant native to Africa, known for its robustness and exceptional tolerance to low light. Its rosettes of long shiny dark green leaves give it an elegant, structured vertical form — a plant column that structures the space without overwhelming it.
Available in two sizes — D17/H70 cm and D24/H130 cm. Air-purifying, very easy to care for, ideal for low-light spaces. Note: toxic to pets.
Which size should you choose?
The Dracaena Janet Lind is available in two sizes — same foliage, same care, different visual impact:
- D17 cm / H70 cm — medium size, ideal for a high shelf, desk, or living room corner. Fits into a space without dominating it.
- D24 cm / H130 cm — impressive size, perfect for structuring a large living room, entrance, or hallway. Creates a strong vertical plant presence.
For a first Dracaena, the D17/H70 cm size is the most versatile. The D24/H130 cm is reserved for spaces that can accommodate a large structural plant.
Which variety of Dracaena should you choose?
The Dracaena genus features very distinct foliage types. Here are the available profiles:
- Dracaena Janet Lind (this plant) — uniform shiny dark green foliage. The most understated and elegant.
- Dracaena Marginata — slender leaves with red edges, very graphic. The most iconic.
- Dracaena Lemon Lime — variegated green and lemon yellow foliage. The brightest.
- Dracaena Magenta — spectacular purple and green foliage. The most colorful.
- Dracaena Anita — large dark green leaves, impressive size H100 cm. The most majestic.
Other varieties are available in our full Dracaena collection — Bicolor, Compacta, and more.
Exposure & location
The Dracaena Janet Lind is one of the most low-light tolerant houseplants — a valuable asset for dark spaces.
- Ideal exposure: moderate to low indirect light — indoor office, hallway, bedroom away from windows.
- Tolerates: partial shade, artificial light only, dry air.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns and fades the leaves.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, tolerates fluctuations.
If the leaves turn greener but lose their shine, move the plant closer to a light source. If the leaves yellow, it’s almost always overwatering — not lack of light. Check our light and humidity guide to find the right spot.
Watering & care
- Watering: minimal — let the soil surface dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once every 2 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Water: preferably non-limescale water — Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride in tap water.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential — excess water is its main cause of death.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 6 to 8 weeks in spring and summer.
The Dracaena prefers underwatering to overwatering. When in doubt, always wait. Check out our complete watering guide to never overwater again.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its upright shape and shiny dark green foliage make it a structural plant — it fills vertical space without spreading out.
- In a dark corner: the D24/H130 cm transforms a dim spot into a strong green focal point — where few other plants would thrive.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Sansevieria for a trio of shade-tolerant plants with very distinct foliage.
- Ideal pot: matte black, gray, or terracotta ceramic — dark tones highlight the shiny dark green without competing with it.
Verdeia advice
- Lower leaves yellow naturally — this is a normal leaf renewal process. Gently remove them at the base as soon as they yellow. It is not a sign of disease.
- Overwatering is its only real risk — root rot, soft stems, widespread yellowing leaves. When in doubt, always wait before watering.
- Sensitive to fluoride — highly chlorinated or fluoridated tap water can cause brown tips. Prefer filtered or rested water for 24 hours. See our new plant care guide to get started right.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets — contains irritating saponins. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
