Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the tips of a Dracaena's leaves turn brown? It is almost always related to hard water or too dry air — switch to filtered or rainwater and lightly mist the foliage to stop the effect on the long, slender leaves sensitive to deposits.
How often should you water a Dracaena Magenta? Every 10 to 15 days, allowing the surface of the soil to dry completely between waterings — excess water is its main weakness, a slight lack won’t cause any visible damage.

🌿 Long dark green and burgundy tapered leaves • ✨ Slender, branched silhouette • 🌤️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Water every 10-15 days • 🏙️ 5 sizes available
The Dracaena marginata 'Magenta', also called purple dracaena or dragon tree, is a graphic and slender tropical plant native to tropical Africa. Its long tapered leaves with deep dark green and burgundy hues grow on thin stems that gradually branch out to form a very recognizable architectural silhouette — light at the top, structured at the base, with a strong vertical presence in contemporary interiors.
The burgundy color of the foliage intensifies in bright indirect light — in a bright corner, the leaves take on a very deep purple shine that sets this variety apart from all other Dracaena with green leaves in the catalog.
Which Dracaena variety to choose?
The Dracaena genus offers several very distinct shapes and color palettes — here are the most distinctive references in the catalog:
- Dracaena 'Magenta' (this plant) — long tapered dark green and burgundy leaves, branched stems, 5 sizes from 50 to 90 cm. The most colorful and graphic in the range.
- Dracaena marginata — long tapered dark green leaves with very fine red edges, similar shape. The choice for a more understated palette with just a red trim.
- Dracaena Lemon Lime — variegated lemon yellow and bright green leaves, very luminous. The choice for a warm and very bright palette.
- Dracaena Janet Lind — wider dark green leaves, denser and bushier shape. The choice for a fuller volume in the same vertical size.
- Dracaena compacta — very short, dense leaf clusters at the top of bare stems, very architectural. The choice for a highly sculpted bonsai-like silhouette.
Light & placement
Dracaena Magenta tolerates partial shade very well but reveals its most intense burgundy hues in bright indirect light — this is where the purple tone reaches its full depth. Among graphic vertical plants suited for low-light spaces, it is one of the few to offer true color under these conditions.
- Light: partial shade to indirect light — burgundy hues intensify in bright indirect light, slightly fade in shade.
- Avoid: direct sun that burns leaf tips, cold drafts.
- Placement: living room, entrance, office — its slender silhouette fits perfectly in corners and small spaces.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C.
Rotate the plant regularly — Dracaena naturally orients its leaves toward the light, and without rotation, all leaf clusters point in the same direction, losing the balanced silhouette that gives it elegance.
Watering & care
Dracaena Magenta is very tolerant of missed waterings — its tough leaves store moisture and allow it to easily go one or two weeks without water. As with other indoor Dracaenas, overwatering is its main weakness.
- Frequency: every 10 to 15 days — water when the surface of the substrate feels dry to the touch.
- Water: room temperature, preferably low in lime — leaf tips brown with very hard water.
- Drainage: avoid water stagnation in the decorative pot — main cause of root rot.
- Cleaning: dust the long leaves with a soft damp cloth to preserve their shine and burgundy hues.
- Pruning: remove dry lower leaves at the base to maintain a clean, slender silhouette.
If leaf tips brown regularly despite proper watering, switch to filtered or rainwater — Dracaena is sensitive to lime buildup on the tapered tips.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The slender, branched silhouette of Dracaena Magenta makes it an ideal architectural plant to structure a vertical interior — its burgundy leaf clusters atop thin stems create a strong focal point that interacts with raw materials and denser foliage in any contemporary tropical composition.
- To soften the slender silhouette, pair Dracaena Magenta with a Spathiphyllum — the white spathes and dense deep green foliage of Spathiphyllum at the base of the Dracaena create a very balanced contrast of height and color.
- To enhance warm and colorful tones, pair it with a Philodendron Imperial Red — the burgundy leaves of Dracaena and the large copper-red leaves of Philodendron create a composition entirely in a very sophisticated palette of reds and burgundies.
- For a very graphic urban composition, pair it with a Sansevieria Laurentii and a Zamioculcas — three very hardy plants with radically different silhouettes in the same palette of greens and dark shades, very contemporary.
- In a decorative pot of raw concrete, matte black ceramic, or anthracite metal, dark, textured materials highlight the deep burgundy of the foliage — choose a matte dark ceramic decorative pot for a very graphic and contemporary look.
Verdeia tips
- Place it in a bright spot to intensify the burgundy: the purple shade of the leaves is directly linked to the light received — in bright indirect light, the burgundy hues are very deep and saturated; in partial shade, they gradually fade to a more ordinary green.
- Remove dry lower leaves as they appear: Dracaena Magenta naturally loses its lowest leaves as it grows, gradually exposing its thin stems — removing these dry leaves at the base maintains a clean silhouette and accentuates the plant’s architectural character.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring with a light, well-draining substrate: Dracaena is a slow-growing plant that prefers a slightly snug pot — the steps for repotting indoor plants fully apply here.
