Frequently Asked Questions
How to prune the potted blackberry and raspberry plants? Prune at the end of winter (February-March) only the stems that have already fruited — recognizable by their more woody and dry wood. Remove them at the base. Keep the new green shoots of the year — these will produce the fruits for the next season. Never prune in autumn.
Can the Blackberry Raspberry pack stay outside all year round? Yes, both varieties are very hardy and can withstand down to -15°C. They can stay in pots on a balcony or terrace all year without protection. Water very little in winter during dormancy — they will lose their leaves but will grow back vigorously in spring.

🌿 2 organic fruit shrubs • 🍇 Blackberries + red raspberries • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🎯 Harvests spread from June to September • ❄️ Hardy to -15°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
This Organic Blackberry and Raspberry Pack brings together two fruit shrubs grown using organic farming methods: Rubus fruticosus 'Lochness' (thornless blackberry) and Rubus idaeus 'Malling Promise' (early raspberry). Their complementary harvest periods — raspberries in June-July and blackberries in August-September — extend fruit production throughout the summer season.
Two certified organic, very hardy shrubs that are easy to grow in a pot on a balcony or terrace. Pair them with fruit trees and aromatic plants and urban vegetable gardens.
Pack or separate plants?
The pack is the most complete solution — two different fruits, with harvests spread over 4 months. If you would like one or the other separately, or other blackberry varieties:
- Organic blackberry + raspberry pack (this product) — complete duo, with harvests spread from June to September. The turnkey solution.
- Organic 'Malling Promise' raspberry plant only — highly fragrant red raspberries, harvest from June to July.
- 'Black Satin' organic blackberry plant only — glossy black blackberries, harvest from July to September, thornless.
- 'Thornless Evergreen' blackberry plant — semi-evergreen blackberry plant with decorative foliage, harvest from August to October.
The 'Lochness' blackberry plant in the pack is thornless — a practical advantage for harvesting and maintenance, especially on a balcony or terrace where space is limited.
Exposure & location
The two shrubs have the same requirements — making it easy to place them together on a balcony or terrace.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Location: sunny balcony or terrace, urban garden.
- Hardiness: very hardy down to -15 °C — can stay outdoors all year round.
- Substrate: rich and well-drained — compost-enriched potting soil for fruit trees or universal potting soil.
- Pot: at least 30–40 cm in diameter per plant for good root development.
- Support: provide a stake or trellis to guide the stems and make harvesting easier.
The sunnier the exposure, the sweeter the fruit and the more abundant the production. Both shrubs particularly appreciate the morning sun.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - keep the substrate moist without waterlogging it, especially during fruiting.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pots with drainage holes are essential for each plant.
- Fertilizer: organic fertilizer for fruit trees and shrubs, once a month in spring and summer - consistent with their organic certification.
- Pruning: at the end of winter, prune stems that have already fruited to encourage new productive shoots for the following season.
A lack of water during fruiting produces small, less sweet fruit. Maintain regular watering from May to September for an optimal harvest. The first few days matter: a few simple steps help you welcome a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Productive and decorative - the white spring blooms, red then black fruits, and green foliage create a composition that evolves visually throughout the season.
- In an urban vegetable garden: pair them with an organic Blackcurrant bush to complete the fruit palette with a third harvest - blackcurrants in July-August.
- With aromatic herbs: lavender, thyme, or rosemary at the base complete the composition, attract pollinators, and maximize space.
- Ideal pot: large terracotta or wooden pots - one pot per plant, at least 30–40 cm in diameter.
White spring blooms attract pollinators - bees and bumblebees promote better fruit set for both shrubs. Follow the seasonal tasks in the month-by-month care calendar.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune fruited canes, not new ones — raspberries and blackberries fruit on different canes depending on the species. At the end of winter, remove only the canes that bore fruit the previous season — they can be recognised by their more lignified wood. The new green shoots will produce fruit the following season.
- Use organic fertiliser only — as certified organic plants, they deserve a suitable fertiliser. Organic fertiliser for fruit trees in spring is sufficient — avoid chemical fertilisers. The right fertiliser depends on the plant's needs, according to the principles of plant nutrition.
- Provide support from the start — raspberry and blackberry canes grow quickly. A stake or trellis installed at planting makes it easier to manage the canes and harvest the fruit.
- Harvest at the right time — raspberries should be harvested when they detach easily from their receptacle, and blackberries when they are fully black and slightly soft. Do not pick them too early — unripe fruit is acidic.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — blackberries and raspberries are edible and safe for animals and children.
