Understanding what each component does allows you to create the right mix for each plant and avoid the number one cause of indoor troubles: a substrate that retains too much water.

When an indoor plant withers, we examine its leaves, adjust watering, move it toward the light. Yet, the real answer is often invisible, buried in the pot. The substrate — the mixture in which the roots grow — alone determines whether water drains or stagnates, whether air circulates or is lacking, whether roots breathe or suffocate. Choosing and composing it correctly solves half the problems before they even appear.


What is a substrate really for

We often imagine that the role of the substrate is limited to "feeding" the plant. In reality, this is its least important function. A good substrate primarily fulfills a physical balance: it must hold the plant, retain just enough water, allow air to reach the roots, and provide a minimum of nutrients. These four tasks happen simultaneously, and their proper balance makes the difference between a thriving plant and a struggling one.

Anchoring the plant

The substrate holds the roots in place and gives the plant its stability. A tall plant in a mixture that is too light will topple; in a mixture that is too compact, it can no longer spread its root network.

The substrate must behave like a sponge that retains moisture available between two waterings, then lets the excess drain. This delicate balance prevents both drying out and rot.

Letting the roots breathe

It is often forgotten: roots need oxygen. A substrate soaked with water expels the air from the gaps and suffocates the roots, causing their rot much more surely than forgetting to water.

Providing nutrients

The substrate contains a reserve of nutrients that the plant gradually draws from. This reserve is depleted in a few months: that is why fertilization is used afterward rather than constantly changing the soil.

Remember this simple principle: a good substrate is not the one that retains the most water, but the one that best manages the balance between water and air. Most quality mixes achieve this by combining a support that retains moisture and elements that aerate it. This is exactly what we will break down, component by component. Potting soil, the foundation of everything

Potting soil is the starting point of almost all mixes. It is an organic matter, derived from the decomposition of plants, to which peat, coconut fiber, compost, or bark are added according to recipes. Its primary quality is to retain the water and nutrients; its flaw, when alone, is to compact over time and eventually suffocate the roots.

Not all potting soils are equal. A low-end universal potting soil compacts quickly and retains too much water for most indoor plants, which are rather sensitive to excess moisture. A “special green plants” or “indoor plants” potting soil is generally better aerated and suitable for most tropical foliage. For plants that particularly fear stagnant moisture, such as cacti and succulents, a specific potting soil is chosen, much more draining and often mixed with sand.

Potting soil that remains soggy for several days after watering is too retentive for the plant or the pot. Rather than changing the watering, it is often the mix that needs to be lightened with draining components.

Potting soil alone is rarely enough in a closed pot. In nature, the water infiltrates deeply and air circulates in the soil; in a pot, everything is confined. That’s why it is almost always combined with materials that recreate this porosity and prevent the mix from becoming a compact mass. These components are added at the time of planting or repotting, in proportions that depend on the plant.


The components that aerate and drain

They are the ones that transform simple potting soil into a living and breathable substrate. Each has a slightly different texture and role, but all share the same goal: to create air spaces in the mix and facilitate the flow of the water.

Clay pellets

These are small brown and lightweight balls made by firing clay at very high temperatures. Porous, they do not decompose and can be reused year after year. They are used in two ways. As a layer at the bottom of the pot, they create a reservoir where excess water can drain without drowning the roots — especially useful in decorative pots without holes. Mixed into potting soil, they lighten the whole mix and improve aeration. Their other, more technical use concerns hydroponic cultivation, where they completely replace soil.

⚠️ A misconception to nuance

The layer of clay pellets at the bottom of a pot with holes does not really improve drainage: the water passes through the potting soil and then exits through the holes, with or without pellets. However, it is valuable in a container without holes, where it keeps roots away from stagnant water.

Perlite

Perlite consists of those small white grains that look like polystyrene. It is actually a volcanic rock heated until it bursts, making it ultra-light and filled with tiny cavities. Its role is simple and highly effective: incorporated into potting soil, it creates air pockets, prevents the mix from compacting, and allows water to flow through. It is one of the best allies against excess moisture and probably the most versatile component for most indoor plants. It retains neither water nor nutrients: it only aerates, which is exactly what is needed.

Vermiculite

Often confused with perlite, vermiculite actually plays the opposite role. It is a flaky mineral, golden to brown, that retains water and nutrients rather than letting them drain away. It is therefore used when you want to maintain a wetter and more stable mix, especially for seedlings, cuttings, or plants that like constant humidity. Perlite to aerate and drain, vermiculite to retain: the two complement each other depending on the desired effect.

In practice, perlite is by far the most used for classic indoor plants, as the main risk in a pot remains excess water rather than lack of it. A handful of perlite added to commercial potting soil is often enough to make it much healthier for the roots and to space out watering without stress. It is also one of the simplest actions to prevent yellowing of foliage caused by a substrate that stays waterlogged.

Specific components

Beyond the basic trio, some materials meet specific needs. They are not used systematically, but they make a difference for certain families of plants.

Pine bark

Coarse and slow to decompose, pine bark creates large air spaces in the substrate. It is the key component of mixes for epiphytic plants — orchids, some aroids, anthuriums — whose roots, used to clinging to trees, need plenty of air and hate staying in contact with wet soil.

Coconut fiber

Derived from the coconut husk, it is an eco-friendly alternative to peat. It retains moisture well while remaining airy and rehydrates easily even after complete drying. It is found in many modern potting soils and tropical plant mixes.

Horticultural charcoal

In small amounts, horticultural charcoal helps sanitize the mix and limit bad odors, especially in closed containers like terrariums. Its role remains secondary but useful in these confined conditions.

Sand and pumice

Coarse sand and pumice, a crushed volcanic rock, weigh down and drain the mix. They are reserved for plants that require a very dry substrate between waterings, like cacti, succulents, and some Mediterranean plants grown in pots.

None of these components is essential everywhere. The right substrate isn’t the richest in ingredients, but the one that matches the real needs of the plant you’re growing.


Composing the right mix

No need to become a chemist: most houseplants are happy with a few simple recipes. The idea is always the same — start with good potting soil and adjust it with draining components according to the plant’s tolerance to moisture. Here are reliable starting mixes for the main families we grow at home.

These proportions are starting points, not dogmas. A very warm and dry interior will require a slightly more moisture-retentive mix; a cool and dim room, where the substrate dries slowly, will benefit from being lighter. Observe your plant and how quickly the pot dries: this is the best indicator for adjustment. And don’t forget that the container matters as much as the mix — a suitable pot with proper drainage does half the work.

The most common mistakes

Most substrate-related disappointments come from a few deeply ingrained habits. Knowing them is already avoiding them.

  • Keeping the original potting soil for years: it compacts, becomes nutrient-poor, and eventually suffocates the roots. Refresh it regularly.
  • Using a low-quality universal potting soil for everything: too water-retentive, it often dooms plants sensitive to excess water.
  • Relying on a layer of clay balls to "drain" a pot with holes: it does not replace a good mix or real drainage holes.
  • Firmly compacting the substrate when repotting: this expels the air roots need. Keep it loose and airy.
  • Repotting in a pot that is far too large: the excess volume of soil stays wet too long and causes root rot.

Behind these mistakes, there is always the same common thread: too much retained water, not enough air. Whenever in doubt, lean towards a more aerated mix rather than a more water-retentive one. A plant tolerates slight water shortage much better than chronic excess, and a breathable substrate forgives many watering mistakes. When to refresh the substrate

A substrate is not eternal. Over time, organic matter decomposes, the mix compacts, loses its porosity, and becomes nutrient-poor. The result: water circulates less well, roots lack air, and the plant slows down, even if well watered. Refreshing or renewing the substrate is then part of normal maintenance.

For most indoor plants, repotting in fresh mix every two to three years is recommended, preferably in spring, when renewed growth helps the plant settle in. Between repottings, you can simply remove the top few centimeters of soil and replace it with fresh potting soil: this surface refresh gives a boost without disturbing the roots. When watering water passes through the pot in a second without moistening the root ball, or conversely stagnates long on the surface, the substrate has lost its structure. In both cases, it’s time to renew it.

Once this mechanism is grasped, most care actions become logical: why certain watering drowns one plant but not another, why a pot that’s too big harms, why a plant recovers after repotting.
