Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the variegations on my Aglaonema fading? It's a lack of light. New leaves come out greener when the plant doesn't get enough indirect light. Move it to a brighter spot without direct sunlight — the variegation will return on new growth within a few weeks.
Is the Aglaonema Romeo toxic to pets? Yes, like all Aglaonemas, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate mucous membranes. It is toxic to dogs and cats if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌿 Silver-variegated green foliage • 🌓 Tolerates partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Aglaonema Romeo, also known as Chinese Plant or Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical plant native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Its large, oval dark green leaves, marbled with silver and cream variegation, create graphic, luminous foliage — particularly effective in dim corners where few decorative plants survive.
Hardy, forgiving of missed waterings, and adaptable to varying light levels, it is one of the easiest indoor plants for beginners and city dwellers. It also helps purify the air. Please note: toxic if ingested by animals — keep out of reach.
Which Aglaonema variety should you choose?
Aglaonemas are distinguished mainly by the color and intensity of their variegation. Here are the most distinctive profiles among the Aglaonemas:
- Aglaonema Romeo (this plant) — dark green leaves variegated with silver and cream, bushy growth. The most balanced and versatile.
- Aglaonema Silver Bay — predominantly silver leaves with a bright appearance. The lightest and most graphic.
- Aglaonema Spring Red — green and pink-red leaves, touches of warm color. The most colorful and original.
- Aglaonema Jungle Silver — highly graphic marbled silver foliage, medium size. The most contrasting.
- Aglaonema B.J. Freedman — large dark green leaves, an imposing 70 cm size. The largest.
Other varieties are available in our collection — including compact sizes and creamy white tones to suit every style. They all belong to the Aglaonemas.
Light & placement
The Aglaonema Romeo naturally grows beneath the canopy of tropical forests — it is one of the most low-light-tolerant indoor plants while retaining decorative foliage.
- Ideal exposure: moderate indirect light — a few meters from a window, in a living room or home office.
- Tolerates: partial shade, low-light spaces, artificial light only.
- To avoid: prolonged direct sun, which fades the variegation and burns the leaves.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C — highly sensitive to cold. Below 15 °C, growth stops and spots appear on the leaves.
- Substrate: well-draining all-purpose potting soil with a little perlite.
The brighter the location (without direct sun), the more pronounced and contrasting the silver variegation will be. In a dark corner, the foliage tends to turn green again — this is reversible by moving the plant.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: once a week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Water: room-temperature, filtered water, or water left to stand for 24 hours if possible.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air but appreciates 50–70% humidity — mist occasionally in heated winter conditions.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: dust the large leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine and promote photosynthesis.
Aglaonema is very forgiving of missed waterings — when in doubt, wait rather than overwater. Excess water is its main cause of decline.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its bushy growth and graphic foliage, the Aglaonema Romeo structures a space without overpowering it. It adds plant texture where other plants would not survive.
- In a low-light corner: placed on a piece of furniture or a shelf a few meters from a window, it remains decorative where most architectural plants would become leggy.
- In an arrangement: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Philodendron for a contrast of textures and volumes in a low-light interior.
- Ideal Pot: white, gray, or terracotta matte ceramic — neutral tones highlight the silver variegation without competing with it.
Group several Aglaonema varieties with different variegation patterns to create a cohesive indoor tropical display — same requirements, guaranteed visual contrast.
Verdeia tips
- Yellow leaves: check drainage first — yellowing is almost always caused by excess water or stagnant water in the saucer. Always empty the saucer after watering and let the substrate dry out more between waterings.
- Variegation fading: insufficient light — if new leaves emerge greener and less silver, move the plant to a brighter location. The variegation returns on new growth as soon as there is sufficient light.
- Protect it from the cold — Aglaonema is particularly sensitive to low temperatures. Below 15 °C, growth stops and brown or translucent spots appear on the leaves. Move it away from poorly insulated windows in winter and from draughts.
- Brown tips: air that is too dry or too much fertiliser — mist the foliage in very dry conditions and always dilute fertiliser to half strength. Fertiliser that is too concentrated burns the roots and causes brown tips.
- Repot in spring without urgency — Aglaonema prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when the roots emerge from the bottom of the pot, every 2–3 years, in a slightly larger pot.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate mucous membranes. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and young children. In a household with animals, it is best to choose from the compatible plants and animals.
