🌺 Glossy red flowers all year round • 🌿 Persistent glossy green foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
Anthurium Red (Anthurium andreanum), also called the flamingo flower or flamingo lily, is an iconic tropical plant native to the humid forests of South America. Its glossy red spathes — modified leaves that make up its "flower" — bring an intense, long-lasting splash of color to contemporary interiors. Its flowering can last for several months and renews regularly throughout the year.
With its long-lasting flowering and persistent graphic foliage, it stands out among the most decorative flowering indoor plants in the catalog and in Verdeia's Anthurium collection.
Which Anthurium color should you choose?
Verdeia offers several Anthuriums in distinct color palettes. Here is how to place Anthurium Red among the products in the Anthurium collection:
- Anthurium Red (this plant) — glossy bright-red spathes, classic and impactful. The choice for a strong splash of color and spectacular flowering.
- Anthurium White — glossy pure-white spathes with an elegant, clean form. The choice for a contemporary, minimalist effect.
- Anthurium Calon — delicate salmon-pink spathes in a soft, warm shade. The choice for a more soothing and feminine palette.
- Anthurium Black Love — deep burgundy, almost black spathes with a striking graphic look. The choice for dark, dramatic contrast in a contemporary interior.
- Anthurium Sweet Dream — pale pink spathes marbled with white, creating a delicate and original effect. The choice for softer, more nuanced flowering.
- Anthurium Success Red — intense red spathes on long stems, with a more slender form. The choice for a larger size with an even more intense red.
Exposure & placement
Anthurium Red thrives in bright but always indirect light — this is the main condition for maintaining regular, intense flowering. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity indoors.
- Light: bright indirect light — near an east- or north-facing window, sheltered from direct sun that burns the spathes and fades the foliage.
- Partial shade: tolerated, but flowering will be less abundant and less frequent.
- Locations: living room, office, entryway, reception area — anywhere its red flowers can make a strong decorative statement.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, in a slightly humid atmosphere, protected from cold drafts.
The more intense the indirect light, the more abundant and long-lasting the flowering will be — an east-facing window with a few hours of gentle morning sun is its ideal exposure for almost continuous flowering.
Watering & care
Anthurium Red prefers slightly moist but never waterlogged soil — as with most flowering tropical plants, excess water is its main threat. Watering indoor plants should be guided by how quickly the soil dries, not by the calendar.
- Frequency: about once a week — water when the surface of the growing medium begins to dry out.
- Water: low-lime, at room temperature — limescale causes brown spots on the spathes and glossy foliage.
- In winter: slightly reduce watering.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly to maintain the tropical atmosphere it needs.
- Flowering: remove faded spathes at the base of the stem to stimulate the production of new flowers.
A phosphorus-rich fertilizer (flowering fertilizer) diluted once a month in spring and summer stimulates the production of new spathes, in step with the life cycle of indoor plants.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The intense glossy red of Anthurium Red's spathes makes it a natural focal point in any arrangement — it creates a warm color accent throughout the indoor plant flowering calendar.
- For a highly graphic tropical floral arrangement, pair Anthurium Red with a Spathiphyllum and a Calathea Orbifolia — the intense red of the spathes contrasts with the pure white of the Spathiphyllum and the silver stripes of the Calathea for a highly sophisticated arrangement with three color accents.
- On an entryway console or desk, place Anthurium Red in a matte black or gold ceramic decorative pot — black intensifies the red of the spathes, while gold echoes the glossy sheen of the foliage for a highly elegant look.
- For a tropical combination with contrasting foliage, pair it with a Monstera deliciosa — Monstera's large split leaves provide a graphic green backdrop that highlights the intense, glossy color of the Anthurium's spathes.
- In a monochrome duo from the same range, pair Anthurium Red with Anthurium Black Love — the bright red and almost-black burgundy create a dramatic, highly contemporary complementary palette, ideal for a reception area or a minimalist living room.
Verdeia tips
- Remove faded spathes as soon as they turn green and wilt: cutting the flower stem at the base frees the plant's energy to produce new spathes — this is the most effective step for maintaining almost continuous flowering all year round.
- Water with filtered water at room temperature: Anthurium is sensitive to limescale, which leaves white deposits on the glossy spathes and shiny foliage — filtered or rainwater preserves the brilliance of the flowers over time.
- Repot every 2 years in spring in well-draining soil: Anthurium Red gradually develops roots and flowers better when its roots are slightly cramped — use a mix of orchid bark and universal potting soil for optimal drainage. Repotting in spring is sufficient, using a pot only slightly larger.
