🌿 Slightly wavy glossy green fronds • 🪺 Elegant bird's-nest rosette • 🧺 Black Selin pot included • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
Asplenium nidus 'Osaka', or Bird's Nest Fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia and Australia. Its slightly wavy, glossy green fronds unfurl in a characteristic rosette reminiscent of a bird's nest — a sculptural and soothing silhouette. Delivered in its included black Selin pot (Ø18 x H16 cm). H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm.
Air-purifying, non-toxic. A reliable choice among air-purifying plants.
Which Asplenium variety should you choose?
The Asplenium genus comes in several degrees of frond waviness:
- Asplenium 'Osaka' (this plant) — slightly wavy, glossy green fronds, compact H40 cm size. The ideal balance between smooth and graphic.
- Asplenium Campio — more pronounced wavy fronds, H50 cm size. The most graphic.
- Asplenium Crispy Wave — very wavy, crinkled fronds, miniature H25 cm size. The most compact and textured.
- Asplenium Antiquum — classic, smooth and glossy fronds, several sizes. The most understated.
- Asplenium Nidus Crissie — elegant, wavy fronds, generous size. The most luxuriant.
Exposure & placement
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to soft indirect light.
- Tolerates: low light.
- Avoid: direct sun, which can scorch and discolor the delicate fronds.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Humidity: 60-80% recommended - bright bathrooms are ideal.
Bright bathrooms are perfect for Aspleniums - natural humidity promotes lush fronds. Its ideal location depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular - keep the substrate slightly moist without ever waterlogging it.
- Technique: always water around the rosette, never in the center - stagnant the water in the heart causes rot.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently remove dead fronds at the base.
Never water directly into the center of the rosette - this is the most important step for keeping this fern healthy. The watering frequency varies with the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its sculptural rosette shape and elegant black Selin pot make it a decorative arrangement ready to display.
- Ready to display: the included black Selin pot creates a striking contrast with the fronds' glossy green - a cohesive and elegant arrangement with no additional purchase required.
- In an arrangement: pair it with a Calathea Medallion or a Spathiphyllum for a tropical, air-purifying arrangement with highly contrasting foliage.
- Style: tropical, elegant, urban jungle - its glossy fronds complement all contemporary interiors.
New fronds emerge coiled from the center of the rosette — place the plant somewhere clearly visible to enjoy this fascinating botanical spectacle. Other ferns complete the indoor jungle.
Verdeia tips
- Never water the center of the rosette — always water around it. This is the golden rule for Asplenium — stagnant water in the center causes rot that is difficult to treat.
- High humidity is essential — air that is too dry causes brown, brittle fronds. A humidifier or a bright bathroom are the best solutions.
- Repot every 2-3 years — in spring, in a light substrate for ferns. Repotting in spring is sufficient, in a pot that is only slightly larger.
