Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Monstera Minima different from the Monstera deliciosa? Yes — Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is a distinct species that looks similar but remains much more compact, with smaller, more finely cut leaves, ideal for spaces where Monstera deliciosa would be too large.
Can kokodama be placed or must it be hung? Both are possible — when hung, it fully reveals its trailing stems; placed on a shelf or furniture, it creates a more compact and structured effect, optionally guided on a small stake to climb.

🌿 Graphic and glossy perforated foliage • 🪴 Kokodama in natural coconut fiber • 💧 Watering by immersion • ☀️ Indirect light • 🏙️ H25 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Monstera Minima (Rhaphidophora tetrasperma) is a tropical climbing plant native to Southeast Asia, valued for its finely cut and perforated leaves that evoke the large leaves of Monstera deliciosa in a compact size. Presented in a kokodama made of natural coconut fiber — a substrate ball wrapped in biodegradable coconut — it creates a graphic and eco-friendly tropical hanging decoration that is immediately decorative.
Climbing or trailing depending on the support, it fits into the decorative trailing plants and the indoor jungle collection of the Verdeia catalog.
Which Kokodama to choose?
The Kokodama format is available for several species in the Verdeia catalog — each brings a distinct silhouette and atmosphere:
- Kokodama Monstera Minima (this plant) — glossy green graphic perforated foliage, climbing or trailing habit. The most graphic and tropical.
- Kokodama Jungle Mix — mix of various tropical plants in one support. The most diverse and fullest.
- Kokodama Maranta Mix — Marantas with graphic and colorful foliage. The most colorful and lively thanks to nyctinastic movement.
- Kokodama Pilea peperomioides — round, graphic leaves on upright stems. The most minimalist and design-focused.
- Kokodama Tillandsia Mix — air plants without substrate, watering by misting only. The lightest and most original.
Exposure & location
The Monstera Minima thrives in indirect light — this is the condition for its perforated leaves to develop well and maintain their deep glossy green. The light requirements of hanging tropical plants are detailed in our article on the best hanging plants for indoors.
- Light: indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun that burns delicate leaves.
- Locations: living room, bedroom, office, kitchen, veranda — anywhere a hanging plant can be hung in a stable and bright spot.
- Avoid: cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C.
Hang it at eye level near an east-facing window — the perforated leaves filter the morning light and create a very decorative shadow play on the surrounding walls.
Watering & care
Kokodama requires a specific watering method — coconut fiber dries faster than a classic potted substrate, and immersion watering is the most effective way to hydrate it evenly. The general principles of watering tropical plants still apply as a complement.
- Regular watering: about once a week, water when the substrate is dry on the surface.
- Summer watering: immerse the kokodama for 10 minutes in room temperature water every 2 weeks to hydrate it evenly.
- Humidity: mist the foliage 1 to 2 times a week to maintain good humidity levels.
- Fertilizer: a diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a soft cloth to preserve their shine.
If the coconut fiber dries too quickly, temporarily place the kokodama on a tray of moist clay pebbles — evaporation maintains a constant ambient humidity around the substrate.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The suspended kokodama format allows you to create aerial multi-level plant arrangements — each plant becomes a graphic plant mobile, as detailed in our tips for choosing between hanging and XXL plants.
- For a three-level plant curtain, hang the Kokodama Monstera Minima at the highest level, a Scindapsus pictus 'Trebie' at the intermediate level, and a Philodendron scandens at the lowest level — the three distinct foliage types create a very graphic tropical plant cascade.
- For a varied Kokodama composition, pair this Monstera Minima with the Kokodama Maranta Mix and the Kokodama Pilea — hanging at different heights, they form a lively, botanical plant mobile.
- To enrich a floor arrangement, combine the suspension with a potted Monstera adansonii on the floor — the two species with perforated leaves create a coherent visual dialogue between floor and ceiling.
- In a kitchen or sunroom, the hanging Kokodama Monstera Minima adds a graphic touch of greenery without cluttering the workspace — choose a natural cord or macramé to enhance the organic look of the coconut fiber kokodama.
Verdeia tips
- Rotate the plant regularly to balance growth: Monstera Minima naturally orients its stems toward the light — turning it a quarter turn every two weeks ensures a balanced shape and evenly spaced leaves on all sides.
- Pinch the stem tips to encourage branching: left unpruned, Rhaphidophora tetrasperma produces long, sparsely branched stems — pinching the tips promotes new shoots and a denser, fuller shape.
- Hang the suspension in a stable place away from drafts: repeated movements caused by drafts weaken the stems and accelerate drying of the coconut fiber — a calm, stable location ensures steady growth and less frequent watering.
