Frequently asked questions
How to preserve the colors of the Croton Mammi? The yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with good bright indirect light. Without enough light, new leaves come out green and the colors gradually fade. Place it near an east- or west-facing window. Leaves that have already turned green will not recolor, but new growth will have the proper colors.
Is the Croton Mammi toxic to pets? Yes, its white sap is irritating and toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. It can also cause skin irritation on contact — wear gloves when cleaning or pruning. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌿 Narrow, wavy, multicolored leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🎨 Colors that intensify with light • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Croton Mammi (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. Its distinctive feature within the Croton family is the shape of its leaves - narrow, wavy, almost twisted - which gives them a unique graphic texture compared with the broad, flat leaves of other varieties. The green, yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with light and evolve throughout the seasons.
Like all Crotons, it requires bright light, consistent humidity, and a stable location - once it has settled in, don't move it. Please note: irritating sap, toxic to animals. Pair it with other Crotons.
Which Croton variety should you choose?
Each Croton has a distinct leaf shape - that's what sets them apart beyond their colors. Here are the available profiles:
- Croton Mammi (this plant) - narrow, wavy, multicolored leaves, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most textured and graphic.
- Croton Wilma - elongated wavy leaves, vivid colors, same size H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. Same growth habit, broader leaves.
- Croton Dreadlock - very narrow, twisted leaves, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most dramatic and original.
- Croton Petra - classic broad oval leaves. The most classic and accessible.
- Croton Magnificent - very large, broad leaves, XXL size H110 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The most imposing.
Mammi is the ideal choice if you're looking for a compact Croton with a unique leaf texture - its wavy leaves immediately set it apart from other varieties, even from a distance. The Croton Sunny Star is available in an even more compact version, H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm.
Exposure & placement
The Croton Mammi is a tropical sun-loving plant - light is non-negotiable.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light - near an east- or west-facing window; a few hours of gentle sunlight are acceptable.
- Avoid: intense midday sun in midsummer, dark rooms that cause the leaves to turn green and fall.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, with no drafts or sudden fluctuations.
- Humidity: 50–70% ambient humidity — mist regularly or place a humidifier nearby.
- Substrate: light, well-draining universal potting soil.
If the new leaves emerge mostly green without vibrant colors, move the plant to a brighter spot — new shoots will develop their colors properly as soon as there is enough light. Its ideal location depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become waterlogged.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring and summer, slightly less often in winter.
- Water: water at room temperature, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — the Croton is sensitive to limescale.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — Mammi's wavy leaves collect less dust than broad leaves but are sensitive to dry air.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth — wear gloves, as the sap is irritating.
The Croton dislikes sudden changes in its environment — avoid moving it once you have found its spot. Choose its permanent place as soon as it arrives: this is the basis for welcoming a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Croton Mammi is a statement plant — its colors and texture immediately draw the eye. It does not need to be surrounded by other plants to stand out.
- On its own in a bright corner: in a white or black ceramic pot, its multicolored wavy leaves create an immediate tropical focal point.
- In contrast with solid green: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Ficus to make its warm colors stand out against a neutral dark green backdrop.
- In a Croton arrangement: combine several Croton varieties — they have the same requirements but highly contrasting leaf shapes. Mammi adds wavy texture to the arrangement.
Its new leaves often emerge green and gradually develop their color — each new shoot is a surprise to watch unfold over the weeks.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its location before delivery — Mammi reacts to changes in location by dropping leaves. Plan its permanent spot before receiving it and do not move it once it is in place.
- Leaf drop upon delivery is normal — slight leaf loss during the first 2 to 3 weeks is the usual reaction to a change in environment. Stabilize the conditions and wait.
- Colors fading: lack of light — if the foliage gradually turns green, move the plant closer to a window. The new leaves will regain their colors.
- High humidity in winter — heating dries out the air and causes brown tips. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby. A few simple steps are enough to help it adjust to the cold season, like all plants in winter.
- The sap is irritating — wear gloves — any cut to the stem releases irritating white latex. Wear gloves when cleaning and pruning.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — the latex and leaves are toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. In a household with animals, it is best to choose from the plants and animals that are compatible.
