Frequently Asked Questions
Is Alocasia Lauterbachiana suitable for large spaces? Yes, its verticality and long slender leaves make it especially suitable for large rooms with high ceilings — it gains visual impact when it has space for each leaf to spread out freely.
Why are the edges of my Alocasia Lauterbachiana’s leaves turning brown? Browning edges are almost always caused by air that is too dry — increase ambient humidity by misting 2 to 3 times a week or placing a humidifier nearby, especially in winter when heating is on.

🌿 Graphic elongated wavy leaves • 🎨 Glossy dark green with pronounced veins • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H80 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Alocasia Lauterbachiana, also called Elephant Ear, is a graphic and airy plant known for its large narrow, wavy, glossy dark green leaves with very pronounced veins borne on long elegant petioles. Its vertical and light silhouette immediately distinguishes it from other Alocasias — an original plant in a very rich genus.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Alocasia lauterbachiana naturally grows in moist, shaded understories. It grows vigorously in spring and summer — it is one of the fast-growing indoor plants that quickly reward good care with ever larger new leaves.
Which Alocasia variety to choose?
The Alocasia genus offers a great diversity of shapes and sizes — here’s how Alocasia Lauterbachiana stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Alocasia Lauterbachiana (this plant) — narrow elongated wavy glossy dark green leaves, pronounced veins, airy vertical habit. The most slender and graphic version.
- Alocasia Zebrina — large arrow-shaped leaves supported by striking black and white striped stems. The version with the most decorative stems.
- Alocasia Wentii — wide dark green leaves with deep purple backs, imposing stature. The most sophisticated bicolor version.
- Alocasia Gageana California — very large thick leaves with spectacular embossed veins. The XXL textured version.
- Alocasia Regal Shield — very large shield-shaped leaves with deep purple undersides. The most majestic version.
- Alocasia Polly — dark green arrow-shaped leaves with very pronounced silvery-white veins, compact size. The classic graphic version.
- Alocasia Cucullata — shiny green heart-shaped rounded leaves, compact and sturdy form. The easiest variety to start with.
Exposure & location
The Alocasia Lauterbachiana enjoys bright indirect light — without enough light, new leaves grow smaller and the veins lose their relief. Light and humidity are the two key factors that make all the difference with Alocasias.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun that burns the leaves.
- Ideal: living room, office, entrance, or large space with a well-lit window without direct sunlight.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
Its vertical silhouette and wavy leaves are best appreciated with space around — avoid crowding it between other plants that would hide its characteristic slender form.
Watering & care
The Alocasia Lauterbachiana prefers a slightly moist substrate — neither soggy nor completely dry. Testing the substrate with your finger before each watering avoids the most common mistake with this species: overwatering in summer.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shiny glow.
It is normal for a lower leaf to yellow when a new one emerges — this is the natural cycle of the Alocasia, not a sign of poor health.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its verticality and very graphic wavy leaves make it a plant that brings lightness where other decorative foliage plants would create a compact mass.
- Pair it with a Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana with white-variegated leaves and a Dracaena Magenta with slender red-edged leaves — three very different foliage types in the same dark green tones, three contrasting textures (wavy / variegated / slender) for a very refined composition.
- Place it in a living room or entryway corner in the Elho Greenville White pot Ø20 cm — the clean white highlights the shiny dark green and pronounced veins of the long wavy leaves.
- Pair it with a Livistona Rotundifolia with round, drooping fronds — the verticality of the slender Lauterbachiana leaves strongly contrasts with the palm’s hanging discs for a very balanced tropical composition.
- For a desk or bookshelf, place it in the gray Borneo basket alongside a Aglaonema Romeo with red and green leaves — the burgundy red of the Aglaonema creates a warm contrast with the dark green wavy leaves of the Lauterbachiana.
Verdeia advice
- Maintain high humidity year-round: the edges of the wavy leaves brown first when the air is too dry — mist 2 to 3 times a week in winter when heating dries the air, and place a humidifier nearby if the problem persists.
- Give it space for its leaves to unfold: the long wavy leaves of the Lauterbachiana get damaged and lose their shape if pressed against a wall or other plants — choose a clear corner that lets each leaf be seen individually.
- Propagate by dividing rhizomes in spring: when repotting, separate the shoots forming at the base of the mother plant — cutting and propagating plants is especially easy with Alocasias and quickly produces new plants.
