Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to train a Cissus to climb or trail? Both work very well — it depends on the decorative effect you want. On a stake or trellis, it creates a dense, graphic green screen. From a high shelf, its stems elegantly cascade down. You can also combine both on the same plant.
How do you make a Cissus bushier? Regularly pinch the tips of the stems — this is the key action. Each pinched stem produces two new shoots and thickens the growth. Without pinching, the plant produces long, thin, sparsely branched stems.

🌿 Deeply lobed, glossy dark green leaves • 🌱 Climbing or trailing depending on placement • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🚀 Vigorous growth • 🐾 Non-toxic
Cissus rhombifolia 'Ellen Danica', also known as Grape ivy, is a tropical climbing plant native to the humid forests of Central and South America. Its glossy, dark green, deeply lobed leaves evoke elegant, graphic vine foliage - it climbs on a support and trails from a shelf, creating a generous and dynamic plant display in both cases. H70 cm | Pot Ø17 cm.
Non-toxic and easy to care for. A reliable choice among climbing plants.
Light & placement
- Ideal light: bright indirect light to partial shade.
- Tolerates: low light - one of the most adaptable climbing plants for shade.
- Avoid: direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Support: stake, trellis, or shelf edge depending on the desired effect.
Install a stake or trellis to guide its growth and create a spectacular climbing effect. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - let the surface of the substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: a drainage hole is essential - it prefers slightly dry substrate to waterlogged substrate.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants every 2-4 weeks in spring and summer.
- Pruning: pinch the tips to encourage branching and a bushier growth habit.
Easy to propagate from cuttings - cut a stem and plant it directly in slightly moist substrate to obtain a new plant within a few weeks. The watering frequency should be adapted to the season.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its graphic, lobed foliage creates an elegant interplay of light and shade - both airy and generous depending on how it is guided.
- On a support: guide the stems upwards along a moss pole or trellis - the dense foliage creates a graphic, natural plant screen.
- As a trailing plant: from a high shelf, its stems cascade elegantly for a waterfall-like plant effect. Combine it with other trailing plants.
- In combination: pair it with a Scindapsus Trebie or a Philodendron Scandens Brasil for a trio of climbing plants with highly contrasting foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Pinch the tips regularly - each pinched stem produces two new shoots. This is the most effective way to obtain a dense, bushy plant rather than long, thin stems.
- Some leaf drop after installation is normal - Cissus gradually adapts to its new environment. Keep conditions stable and new leaves will grow back quickly.
- Repot every 2-3 years - in spring, using a light, well-draining substrate. Repotting in spring is sufficient, in a pot only slightly larger.
- 🐾 Non-toxic - Cissus is completely safe for cats and dogs. In a home with pets, find more pet-friendly ideas among these compatible plants and pets.
