🎨 Mix of light blue, violet-blue and white grape hyacinths • 🌱 Compact, 15 to 20 cm • 🌤️ Flowers from March to April • 🐝 Feeds the first bees • ⛅ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🔁 Naturalizes on its own • 📏 Size 7/8 bulbs
The Muscari Magic Mix brings several grape hyacinths together in one pack: in March and April, clusters of small light blue, violet-blue and white bells rise on 15 to 20 cm stems, mingled at random as in a meadow. These grape hyacinths, of the genus Muscari, come from a European horticultural selection.
Year after year, the bulbs form new offsets and the colors mingle more and more, until they create a nuanced carpet at the foot of trees or along paths. Among our flower bulbs, it is the most varied grape hyacinth, easy to grow in the ground or in pots, and its size 7/8 bulbs flower from the very first spring.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Muscari Magic Mix looks best planted closely in drifts: allow 70 to 100 bulbs per square meter, or 15 to 20 bulbs in a pot 20 cm in diameter.
- 50 bulbs: about 0.5 m² at the foot of a shrub, or two to three 25 cm planters on a balcony.
- 100 bulbs: about 1 m², for a multicolored edging along a path.
- 200 bulbs: about 2 to 3 m², for a blue and white ribbon winding between the borders.
- 400 bulbs: about 5 m², to naturalize a corner of lawn or the base of a hedge.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 400-bulb pack costs less than half the per-bulb price of the 50-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from September to November, as long as the ground is not frozen, for blooms from March to April.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; the mix also flowers under a deciduous tree, which lets light through in spring.
- Depth: 7 to 8 cm, tip pointing up.
- Spacing: 5 to 8 cm between bulbs in the ground; in a pot, they can almost touch.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained, even poor or chalky; it only dislikes standing water.
- Hardiness: down to -20 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Don't worry if leaves emerge in fall: this is normal for grape hyacinths. They survive the winter unharmed, and the flowers arrive in spring.
Watering & care
In the ground, rainfall is enough. In a pot, water only when the top two centimeters of potting soil are dry, following our finger test for knowing when to water: excess water is what makes bulbs rot.
- Watering: minimal — at planting, then in a pot when the potting soil is dry on the surface, especially as the flower clusters emerge.
- Fertilizer: not needed in the ground; in a pot, use bulb fertilizer once the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off if you want to prevent self-seeding, or leave them so the carpet spreads.
- After flowering: leave the foliage in place to yellow for five to six weeks; it replenishes the bulb for the following year.
In a lawn, wait until the leaves have turned yellow before the first mow: grape hyacinths will return in greater numbers each year.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its blue and white bells go with all spring bulbs, following the principles in our guide to pairing plants by color and texture.
- To extend the grape hyacinth season, pair it with the Broad-leaved grape hyacinth — its two-tone navy and sky-blue spikes take over in April and May.
- For a blue, white and yellow trio, mix it with Narcissus 'Tête-à-Tête' — its small yellow trumpets flower in March, at the same height as the clusters.
- To dress the base of tulips, plant it as a carpet in front of the double tulip mix — its blues and whites set off their large peony-shaped flowers.
- For a balcony version, plant 15 to 20 bulbs in the white Elho Greenville Easy Balcony planter, 25 cm — it attaches to the railing and its white brings out the blue shades.
In a pot, plant in layers: tulips at the bottom, 15 cm deep, and muscari above, 7 cm deep. The pot flowers twice, in March and then in April.
Verdeia tips
- Plant upon delivery: small muscari bulbs dry out quickly in the open air. Plant them within the next few days, as recommended in our guide to ordering plants online successfully.
- Cut a few for a mini bouquet: the clusters last five to seven days in a small vase or glass on a table or windowsill.
- Let them naturalize: don't dig up the bulbs, they overwinter in the ground like the species in our selection of cold-hardy plants and form new offsets every year.
