Frequently Asked Questions
Can Davallia bullata be grown without substrate on a bark board? Yes, attach a piece of rhizome with fronds to a cork or bark board kept moist — Davallia naturally grows there as an epiphyte and creates a very striking wall display.
Why are the fronds of my Davallia bullata turning brown? Frond browning is most often due to air that is too dry or a lack of ambient humidity — increase misting frequency and place the plant in a more humid spot like a bright bathroom.

🌿 Silvery hairy creeping rhizomes • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🌴 Graphic epiphyte • 🐾 Non-toxic
Native to the tropical forests of Asia and the Pacific, Davallia bullata is an epiphytic fern that naturally grows on tree trunks and mossy rocks. What sets it apart from all other ferns: its silvery hairy rhizomes — modified stems that store water and nutrients — which creep over the substrate surface, overflow the pot, and earn it the nickname "rabbit foot fern." Among the most original ferns in our fern collection and our original and rare plants, it is also one of the most tolerant to dry air.
Which fern to choose?
Our catalog offers several ferns with very different shapes and requirements:
- Davallia bullata (this plant) — spectacular silvery hairy creeping rhizomes, finely cut soft green foliage (H30 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most original version and the most tolerant to dry air.
- Humata tyermannii — related epiphytic fern with velvety white rhizomes, cut foliage (H20 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The version with the whitest rhizomes.
- Asplenium nidus — large entire glossy green fronds in a rosette, bird’s nest form. The most architectural and easiest version.
- Nephrolepis 'Green Lady' — very dense drooping pinnate fronds, generous habit. The lushest and most classic version.
- Asplenium 'Crispy Wave' — bright green wavy fronds, very modern graphic texture. The most sculptural version.
Light & location
- Light: partial shade to bright indirect light — never direct sun that burns the delicate foliage. Among ferns, Davallia is one of the most tolerant to lower light conditions — finding the right light-humidity balance is key for this species.
- Ideal: bright bathroom, kitchen, bright living room, hanging near an East or North-facing window.
- Temperature: 15 to 24 °C, without sudden changes.
- Substrate: light and airy — special orchid or fern mix (bark, peat, perlite).
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without excess. Unlike most ferns, Davallia better tolerates missed waterings thanks to its rhizomes that store reserves.
- Frequency: about twice a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and airy substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–80% humidity — mist the foliage regularly.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Pruning: remove only dead or browned fronds at the base — never cut the hairy rhizomes.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Hanging or on a high shelf: placed high, its hairy rhizomes naturally overflow the pot and creep downward — this position reveals its unique character and the "rabbit foot" effect is most spectacular.
- Tropical composition: pair it with an Asplenium nidus with large smooth fronds and a Calathea with graphic foliage — three very different leaf textures for a lush tropical atmosphere.
- Ideal pot: a natural Selin basket or a jute decorative pot matches the natural and epiphytic character of this fern — natural materials extend the forest vibe.
Verdeia tips
- Never cut the hairy rhizomes: they are not unwanted adventitious roots but essential storage organs for the plant’s health — let them creep freely outside the pot, it’s a sign of a healthy plant.
- Mount it on a bark board: attach a piece of rhizome with fronds to a moistened cork or bark board to create a spectacular epiphytic wall mount — Davallia naturally grows there without substrate.
- Repot in a wider, not deeper pot: its rhizomes grow horizontally on the surface — choose a wide, shallow container every 2 to 3 years to give them space to spread.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
