🌸 White flowers with an enchanting fragrance • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • ☀️ Gentle sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −15 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' is an evergreen climbing honeysuckle native to Japan, renowned for its white flowers that turn creamy yellow after 48 hours and have a sweet, enchanting fragrance. Flowering from June to September, it attracts bees and butterflies throughout the summer and gracefully winds around trellises, railings, and balconies.
Hardy down to −15 °C, its foliage remains green for most of the winter - one of the most resilient and fragrant climbers in the catalogue.
Which honeysuckle variety should you choose?
The Lonicera genus includes species with very different characteristics. Here is how Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' stands out from the other varieties in the catalogue:
- Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' (this plant) - highly fragrant white flowers that turn creamy yellow, deep green evergreen foliage, continuous flowering from June to September. The most fragrant and most persistent variety.
- Lonicera henryi - very dense, dark green evergreen foliage, small pink-red flowers, vigorous growth. The most covering and graphic variety.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' - highly fragrant two-tone pink and cream flowers, deciduous foliage. The late-flowering, most romantic two-tone variety.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' - fragrant pink and yellow flowers, early spring flowering followed by repeat flowering. The early, naturalistic variety.
Light & location
'Halliana' honeysuckle appreciates soft to bright light - it tolerates partial shade very well but flowers more abundantly in a bright position. Like clematis, it thrives when its roots remain cool and shaded: mulch the base of the pot or cover it with a low-growing plant.
- Light: gentle sun to partial shade - avoid hot afternoon sun.
- Support: trellis, mesh, railing, or wall - it climbs by naturally twining.
- Soil: rich, moist, and well drained.
- Hardiness: down to −15 °C - highly resistant to European winters.
Place it near a seat or an open window to fully enjoy its sweet fragrance in the evening - honeysuckle becomes more fragrant at dusk and in warm weather.
Watering & care
'Halliana' honeysuckle is very undemanding once well established. Water regularly during the first year, then gradually extend the intervals. Yellow leaves generally have three causes: excess water, insufficient light, or nutrient deficiency.
- First year: water regularly to encourage root establishment.
- Afterwards: moderate watering - it tolerates periods without water once established.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage new flowering shoots.
- Winter care: remove dry stems at the end of winter to maintain a dense silhouette.
Remove faded flowers regularly during the season to extend flowering - honeysuckle continuously forms new buds as long as light conditions are favourable.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep green evergreen foliage of 'Halliana' honeysuckle structures its support all year round, with fragrant flowers as the highlight of summer. It works equally well in romantic and contemporary arrangements.
- For a duo of fragrant white climbers, Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' extends the fragrant palette - its evergreen white star jasmine takes over before the honeysuckle and covers the base of the wall while Lonicera fills the upper space.
- To add a contrasting violet note, Clematis 'The President' is an ideal companion - the clematis's large violet star-shaped flowers contrast with the honeysuckle's fragrant white blooms on the same trellis.
- For a romantic wisteria higher up, the white Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' opens the season in May-June with its cascading clusters, before 'Halliana' honeysuckle takes over through September.
- On a balcony in a planter, the green Elho Greenville Easy Balcony planter Ø25 cm complements the honeysuckle's deep green foliage for a natural, plant-filled arrangement on a sunny railing.
Verdeia tips
- Guide the first stems from planting: honeysuckle naturally winds around supports - orient the first stems in the desired direction from the outset, as they will form the main stems for the entire future structure.
- Mulch the base generously: 'Halliana' flowers better when its roots remain cool - a thick 5 to 8 cm layer of mulch around the base of the pot retains summer moisture and protects the roots from winter frost.
- Prune after flowering, not before: light pruning in late September-October maintains the silhouette and encourages the following year's flowering shoots - pruned stems root easily from cuttings to propagate the plant.
