Hedera — Climbing and trailing ivies for walls, facades, and balconies
Hedera, commonly called ivy, is one of the few evergreen climbing plants able to keep its foliage throughout the winter in our climates. The genus includes about a dozen species native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, with a diversity center in the Caucasus and Eastern Mediterranean. It is one of the oldest European ornamental plants: already cultivated in Roman gardens and associated with Dionysus in Greek mythology, it remains a timeless classic for urban facades and low walls.
What sets Hedera apart from other climbers is its attachment by hooks (adventitious aerial roots) that allow it to cling to any support without trellis. Its tolerance to shade, hardiness (down to -20 °C for helix), evergreen foliage, and vigorous growth make it a unique solution to dress a shaded wall, hide a fence, or create a dense green screen on a balcony.
Common ivy, variegated ivy, Algerian or Colchic ivy: choosing your Hedera
The Verdeia collection brings together the main species and cultivars of Hedera. The Hedera helix, the European type species, comes in many varieties: 'Wonder Green' with classic dark green foliage, 'Goldheart' with a golden central heart, 'Pittsburgh' with a trailing habit, and 'Gold Child' variegated yellow and green, particularly bright. The Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo', native to North Africa, charms with its large rounded leaves edged in cream — a more generous cultivar than helix, perfect for south-facing facades sheltered from severe frost. The Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata', known as Colchic ivy, comes from the Black Sea: its leaves can reach 20 cm, making it one of the Hedera with the most impressive foliage. To structure an outdoor dressing project, these varieties naturally fit into the selection of climbing and groundcover plants.
Planting, exposure, and care of ivies
Ivy thrives in shade as well as partial shade, and tolerates sun for variegated varieties which then reveal their most contrasting coloration. It accepts all soil types, including poor and dry once established, but prefers a fresh, humus-rich substrate to establish quickly. Planting is preferably done in autumn or spring, in the ground or in a pot.
Watering should be regular the first year, then greatly reduced: a mature Hedera remarkably resists drought. Pruning is done in late winter or early spring to contain the vigor of plants installed on a wall or facade — simply cut back the shoots that extend beyond. The evergreen foliage can occasionally yellow due to overwatering or waterlogged soil: the yellow leaves guide helps quickly identify the cause. Good news for pet owners: while ivy is not edible, its toxicity by contact remains moderate for animals that do not chew it, making it a more tolerant outdoor climber than wisteria or oleander.
Ivies in pot, hanging, or wall basket
Beyond the classic garden use, Hedera grows remarkably well in a pot on a balcony or terrace. The 'Pittsburgh' and 'Gold Child' XXL, with naturally trailing habit, are ideal for hanging: placed in a wall pot or a decorative pot suspended high, they create a cascade of evergreen foliage all winter — a rare asset. On a north or east-facing terrace, a Hedera helix combined with a clematis with spring flowering forms a climbing duo that covers the whole season. To create a coherent balcony by exposure, the balcony exposure guide details plant combinations according to orientation.
Topiary ivy, plant sculpture, and wall dressing
Ivy lends itself to original decorative uses: trained on a trellis, shaped into topiary (balls, cones, geometric shapes), or used to dress an unsightly fence. Its ability to colonize any support also makes it the ideal companion for balconies and terraces requiring visual privacy: a well-established Hedera colchica or algeriensis creates in two or three seasons an opaque green screen that blocks views. In the end, taking the time to properly welcome a new plant determines how quickly it establishes: careful unpacking, first watering, and choice of support define the following weeks.
