Frequently Asked Questions
Can ivy grow in full shade? Yes, Hedera helix is one of the few evergreen climbers able to quickly cover a north-facing or fully shaded wall, where almost all other climbers refuse to grow.
When to prune outdoor climbing ivy? Prune in spring to guide new shoots and in autumn to control overgrowth — two prunings per year are enough to keep ivy dense and well-defined.

🌿 Dark green foliage that stays evergreen all year • 🧲 Attaches itself — no additional support needed • ☀️ All exposures — sun to full shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Hedera helix, or common climbing ivy, is an evergreen vine native to Europe, ideal for quickly covering walls, façades, and fences. Its clinging roots allow it to attach itself to any rough surface without a trellis or wires — a unique advantage among climbing plants. Its glossy dark green foliage covers the space all year round and withstands both full shade and full sun, making it the most versatile of the climbing plants and ground covers in the catalogue.
Hardy, undemanding, and quick to establish, it is the ideal choice for creating a dense, long-lasting plant screen on a balcony or terrace facing any direction.
Which ivy should you choose?
Verdeia offers several ivies with distinct foliage and uses. Here is how to place Hedera helix among the catalogue's varieties:
- Hedera helix (this plant) — glossy dark green foliage, classic and vigorous, climbing or ground-covering. The benchmark for a dense, fast-growing green screen in all exposures.
- Hedera helix 'Goldheart' — green and golden-yellow variegated foliage, less vigorous than the standard species. The choice for bringing light to a dark wall or a shaded position.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' — very large green and cream variegated leaves, fast-growing and spreading. The variety for a generous, graphic effect over a large area.
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' — large grey-green leaves edged in cream, less hardy (–5 °C). The choice for a lush Mediterranean effect on a sheltered wall.
Position & placement
The Hedera helix is the most tolerant climbing plant for difficult conditions — it grows facing north, in dense shade, beneath trees, or in full sun. Its clinging roots attach themselves to porous surfaces (stone, brick, rough concrete), but it needs a trellis or wires on smooth surfaces (metal, glass, smooth render).
- Position: all exposures without exception — from full sun to full shade.
- Attachment: self-supporting on porous surfaces — trellis required on smooth surfaces.
- Soil: any well-drained soil type — tolerates poor, chalky, and compact soils.
- In a pot: container of at least 20 cm, with more regular watering than when planted in the ground.
In full sun, the foliage develops lighter tones and growth slows slightly — in shade, the leaves are larger and darker, and coverage establishes more quickly.
Watering & care
Once rooted, ivy is extremely self-sufficient and drought-tolerant. In a pot, the finger test is enough to adjust watering — the substrate should dry slightly between waterings. Leaves that unexpectedly turn yellow often have one of the common causes of yellowing: too much water or soil that is too compact.
- Watering: moderate — allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, never leave standing water.
- Pruning: in spring or autumn to contain growth and encourage new shoots.
- Fertiliser: unnecessary in the ground — a light organic application in spring is sufficient in a pot.
- Care: minimal once established — tolerates pollution, wind, and drought.
On a wall, prune stems that move away from the surface twice a year — ivy climbs naturally but can get out of hand and spread towards gutters or windows if it is not guided.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The ivy's dense, evergreen dark green foliage creates a neutral, structured plant backdrop that highlights all plants with colourful blooms — in a Mediterranean garden as well as an outdoor jungle.
- For a north- or east-facing green wall without sunlight, Hedera helix is practically the only evergreen climber capable of quickly covering an area in full shade — pair it with Lonicera henryi to add fragrant orange-pink blooms from May to August on the same wall.
- For a flowering balcony trellis with a permanent green backdrop, train a Passiflora caerulea in front of the ivy — the passionflower's graphic blue blooms stand out with maximum intensity against the ivy's dark green backdrop, which remains evergreen throughout winter while the passionflower is bare.
- For a container arrangement on a shaded terrace, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® in a neighbouring pot — the bright white spherical flower heads contrast strongly with the ivy's dense dark green foliage, creating a luminous effect in a shaded corner.
- To cover the base of a large container, let the stems trail over the sides of a terracotta or brown ceramic pot — trailing ivy softens the container visually and creates a natural transition between the pot and the ground.
In autumn, ivy attracts bees and hoverflies to its discreet flowers, then feeds birds with its winter berries — it is one of the most valuable plants for urban biodiversity all year round.
Verdeia tips
- Prune twice a year to control growth: pruning in spring directs new shoots, while light pruning in autumn keeps overgrowth in check — without regular pruning, ivy can cover several square metres in one season and spread over frames or gutters.
- Never let ivy climb directly on a cracked wall: the clinging roots enter microcracks and gradually widen them — on a sound wall, ivy is harmless, but on deteriorated render it can accelerate damage.
- In a pot, choose a well-draining substrate and do not oversize the container: ivy tolerates being slightly root-bound very well and flowers better in a pot suited to its size — an oversized container retains moisture and encourages root rot.
