Frequently Asked Questions
What is a clumping palm? A clumping palm grows several trunks from the same base, unlike solitary palms which have only one. This clustered growth gives the Caryota Mitis a fuller and more natural silhouette.
Can you prune an indoor palm? Only dead or yellowing fronds at the base — never live fronds. Cutting a green frond creates a permanent scar and weakens the plant.

🌿 Unique fishtail-shaped bipinnate leaves • 🌴 Several slender trunks growing in a clump • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
Caryota Mitis, or Fishtail Palm, is a tropical palm native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia — India, Burma, Thailand, and the Philippines. Its bipinnate fronds with jagged triangular leaflets, unique in the world of palms, resemble fish fins and create an exotic, architectural silhouette. A clumping palm, it develops several slender trunks from the base, creating a full, airy form. Available in two sizes.
Please note: toxic to animals, its sap may irritate the skin. A reliable choice among tropical plants.
Which indoor palm should you choose?
Our catalogue offers several palms with distinct silhouettes:
- Caryota Mitis (this plant) — unique fishtail leaves, with a multi-stemmed clumping habit. The most original and exotic.
- Howea forsteriana — Kentia palm, with elegant, large arched fronds. The most classic and understated.
- Dypsis lutescens — Areca palm, with yellow stems and light fronds. The brightest and airiest.
- Rhapis Excelsa — Fan palm, with graphic fan-shaped leaves. The most structured.
- Livistona Chinensis — Chinese fan palm, with large, cascading leaves. The most graphic.
Caryota Mitis is the only indoor palm with bipinnate leaves — its jagged triangular leaflets set it apart from all others. A reliable choice for an indoor jungle.
Light & placement
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: partial shade.
- To avoid: direct sun, which burns the delicate fronds and makes them turn yellow.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Humidity: high humidity recommended (60-70%) - mist regularly.
- Space: allow room for its fronds to spread freely.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 2-3 weeks for even growth and harmonious fronds on all sides. Its ideal location depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular - keep the substrate slightly moist without ever waterlogging it.
- Water: filtered or rainwater - palms are sensitive to limescale, which turns leaf tips brown.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly, especially in winter.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: remove dead fronds at the base to maintain a neat appearance.
If the leaf tips turn brown, increase humidity and switch to filtered water. Most problems can be quickly identified with a good diagnosis.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its height and unique fronds make it a statement plant that immediately structures the space.
- As a centerpiece: in a bright corner of a living room or conservatory, its fishtail fronds create a striking and original tropical presence.
- For a jungle composition: pair it with a Monstera deliciosa and a Strelitzia Nicolai for a tropical trio with highly contrasting foliage.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic, or a natural-fiber basket - understated materials leave all the attention to the spectacular fronds.
Its unique fronds are just as decorative up close as they are from a distance — a palm that deserves a central, highly visible spot. A reliable choice among XXL large plants.
Verdeia tips
- High humidity is essential — it is the key to healthy, lush fronds. A humidifier nearby is the most effective solution in a heated apartment.
- Never prune living fronds — remove only dead fronds at the base. Cutting a living frond creates a permanent and unsightly wound.
- Repot every 2-3 years — in spring, in a slightly larger pot. Repotting in spring is sufficient, using a pot that is only slightly larger.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals — the sap is irritating and the plant is toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs. In a household with pets, it is best to choose from the plants and pets that are compatible.
