Leucothoe — the shrub with colourful foliage all year round

Leucothoe is a small evergreen shrub that turns its foliage into a show all year round. Its arching stems bear glossy, pointed leaves variegated with cream, pink, golden yellow or purple, which take on red and burgundy tones as soon as the cold arrives. Compact, hardy and fond of part shade, it is the ideal shrub for bringing colour in a pot to a balcony or terrace that does not get sun all day.

Foliage that changes colour with the seasons

Leucothoe's greatest asset is its ever-changing palette. Young spring shoots often emerge bright red or pink, the foliage settles in summer, then colours up again in autumn and winter, when the cool weather deepens the copper and purple tones. In spring, some varieties add small clusters of white bell-shaped flowers, discreet and fragrant. A shrub that never looks the same twice and one of the liveliest outdoor decorative foliage plants.

Leucothoe axillaris: curly, compact foliage

The 'Curly Gold' and 'Curly Red' varieties stand out with wavy, slightly crinkled foliage that gives them a dense, rounded habit. 'Curly Gold' brightens dark corners with soft green leaves washed with yellow, while 'Curly Red' turns deep red in winter. Compact (H40 cm), they are perfect in a window box or a pot on a balcony ledge.

Leucothoe fontanesiana: variegation and flame-like tints

'Colour Diamond' combines green, cream and pink on finely variegated leaves that glow in the shade. 'Makijaz' offers cream and green variegation that turns pink in the cold. 'Little Flames' bears flame-red shoots over glossy green foliage. Their supple habit and arching stems bring movement and lightness to any arrangement.

Burning Love and Scarletta®: the purple varieties

For a bolder effect, Leucothoe keiskei 'Burning Love' takes on purple and burgundy hues, and Scarletta® 'Zeblid' stands out with scarlet young shoots that turn bronze in winter. These dark varieties contrast beautifully with pale foliage or white flowers and bring warmth to a terrace in the cold season.

Position and care

Leucothoe enjoys part shade or light shade: scorching afternoon sun can burn its foliage. It is one of the most colourful plants for a shady balcony. Like rhododendrons, it is an acid-loving plant: in a pot, use ericaceous compost and water with soft water. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged, and mulch the surface to retain moisture. Hardy, it withstands frost and stays decorative all winter, making it one of the most useful cold and frost hardy plants for containers. A light trim after flowering is enough to keep a balanced shape.

Precautions

Like many members of the heather family, Leucothoe is toxic if its leaves or flowers are eaten. Keep it out of reach of young children and pets, and wash your hands after pruning. Once in place on a balcony or terrace, it causes no trouble at all.

Leucothoe on the balcony and terrace

On its own in an elegant pot or paired with other compact shrubs, Leucothoe gives structure to a planter and adds colour in every season. It pairs beautifully with ferns, heucheras, hellebores or heathers to create a shade container that still looks good in winter. It is one of the best choices for a shaded terrace, alongside other mini shrubs and urban perennials to design a balcony that stays alive all year round.
