Frequently Asked Questions
Can a red rose bush survive winter in a pot? In a pot, roots are more vulnerable to frost than in the ground — protect it with a frost cloth or bring it indoors to a cool, bright place as soon as temperatures consistently drop below 0 °C.
How to plant a rose bush in a pot in the ground? Place it directly into the soil, with the original pot slightly buried below ground level, then water thoroughly during the first week to encourage root establishment.

🌹 Deep burgundy-red double flowers • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Regular watering • 🌸 Generous flowering • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
This Red Rose is a compact rose with deep burgundy-red double flowers borne in dense bouquets above glossy, dark green foliage. It is delivered in full bloom with numerous buds — a plant that flourishes immediately and blooms again throughout the summer until autumn.
A universal symbol of love and passion, the red rose is also one of the most generous outdoor plants when it comes to flowering. In a pot on a balcony or planted directly in the ground, it brings color and fragrance throughout the warmer months. It is also one of the most meaningful botanical gifts — for a special occasion or simply to add a touch of color.
Which rose color should you choose?
Here are the roses available in our catalogue to help you choose according to your preferences:
- Red Rose (this plant) — deep burgundy-red double flowers, blooming densely in bouquets. The most intense and symbolic.
- Pale Pink Rose — soft, romantic pink flowers and a compact form. The most delicate and romantic.
- White Rose — pure, luminous white flowers. The most refined and luminous.
- Red 'Crazy in Love' Climbing Rose — climbing rose with large red flowers and a slender H65 cm form. The climbing version for a trellis or training.
- Pink 'Crazy in Love' Climbing Rose — climbing rose with large pink flowers. The romantic climbing version.
- Cream 'Crazy in Love' Climbing Rose — climbing rose with cream and soft pink flowers. The most elegant in warm tones.
Red is the color that stands out best from a distance — ideal for a balcony or terrace visible from the street or from inside an apartment.
Light & placement
The Red Rose blooms more generously the more light it receives — at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sun per day are required for abundant, continuous flowering. Below that, it will bloom but less intensely and become more susceptible to disease.
- Ideal exposure: full sun — balconies, terraces, or windowsills facing south or west.
- Tolerates: light partial shade with at least 4 to 5 hours of sun.
- Avoid: full shade, which stops flowering, and cold drafts.
- Hardiness: hardy down to −5 °C in a pot — protect from severe frost in winter.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining — quality universal potting soil or special rose potting soil.
Avoid watering in the evening — wet leaves that remain damp overnight encourage powdery mildew and rust, the two most common fungal diseases in potted roses.
Watering & care
A potted rose dries out faster than one planted in the ground — check the substrate regularly, especially during hot periods. The first few days matter: a few simple steps help you welcome a new plant properly like your rose.
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without waterlogging it.
- Frequency: approximately every 2 to 3 days in midsummer; reduce significantly in winter.
- Technique: always water at the base — never on the leaves or flowers.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory, and the saucer must be emptied after every watering.
- Fertilizer: special fertilizer for roses or flowering plants, every 2 weeks from March to September.
Remove faded flowers as soon as they start to wither by cutting just above the first five-leaflet leaf — this is the most effective way to trigger a new wave of buds.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep red flowers create a striking contrast against any light-colored background — a white wall, balcony tiles, green or silvery foliage. A reliable choice for a cohesive flowering space to add greenery to your outdoor space.
- On a sunny balcony as a standalone: place it in a anthracite Brussels decorative pot — the contrast between the red flowers and anthracite gray is particularly elegant and contemporary.
- As a trio of rose bushes: pair it with the Pale Pink Rose and the White Rose for a red, pink, and white trio — same size, same care, with a bouquet effect lasting all summer.
- In a floral arrangement: pair it with a Hidcote Blue Lavender — lavender blue and burgundy red are complementary colors that intensify each other, and lavender naturally repels aphids.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the burgundy red also stands out against a white background — a white Greenville decorative pot creates a very striking graphic contrast and highlights each flower individually.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 2 weeks so that all sides receive light evenly and achieve uniform flowering on all sides.
Verdeia tips
- Prune it back hard after the first flowering: as soon as the first flush fades, cut the stems back by one third — the second flowering that follows is generally denser than the first.
- Overwinter it by protecting it from severe frost: below −5 °C, bring the pot indoors to a cool, bright location or wrap it in winter fleece — roots in pots are much more vulnerable to frost than those in the ground.
- Plant it in the ground in spring for maximum longevity: place it directly in the soil, with the original pot slightly buried, and water abundantly during the first week — in the ground, the rose can live and flower for decades.
Lavender planted near a rose naturally repels aphids thanks to its fragrance — a combination that is as functional as it is decorative.
