🌹 Velvet red blooms from June to first frost • 🌿 Shiny dark green foliage • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Rosa Crazy in Love 'Red' is a climbing rose from the European horticultural selection, known for its large, deep velvet red, lightly scented flowers and shiny dark green foliage. From June until the first frosts, its repeat blooms transform balconies, terraces, and pergolas into a floral stage of rare intensity and romance.
Vigorous, very hardy, and easy to care for, this rose is one of the reliable choices among outdoor climbers to bring color and volume to a sunny vertical space.
The Crazy in Love range
'Red' is the most intense version of the Crazy in Love range — three repeat-flowering climbing roses available in velvet red, bright pink (Crazy in Love 'Pink'), and luminous cream (Crazy in Love 'Vanilla'), all vigorous and floriferous from June to the first frosts.
Exposure & location
The 'Crazy in Love Red' rose requires full sun to reveal the full intensity of its velvet red — in partial shade, flowering weakens and foliage becomes more susceptible to fungal diseases.
- Exposure: full sun — minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, ideally facing south or west.
- Support: trellis, arch, fence, or pergola — train the stems from planting.
- Soil: rich, well-drained, and slightly moist.
- In a pot: large deep container with good drainage and regular fertilization throughout the season.
Position the base facing south or west and avoid spots with stagnant air — good air circulation around the foliage greatly reduces the risk of downy mildew and rust.
Watering & care
This rose rewards regular but simple care. The two key actions to maintain abundant flowering throughout the season: never wet the foliage when watering, and remove faded flowers as they appear. If leaves yellow, first check fertilization. To propagate the plant, semi-woody stem cuttings taken in summer root easily.
- Watering: at the base only — 2 to 3 times per week in summer, especially in pots.
- Faded flowers: cut back to the first leaf with 5 leaflets to trigger the next wave.
- Pruning: light at the end of summer; rejuvenation pruning every 2 years at 30 cm from the ground.
- Fertilizer: rose-specific fertilizer in spring and summer — rich in potassium to intensify the red color.
- Mulching: 5 to 8 cm at the base to keep roots cool and prevent diseases.
A potassium-rich fertilizer applied every 3 weeks from May to September is the most direct way to get dense velvet red flowers and sustained repeat blooming until frost.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep velvet red of 'Crazy in Love Red' creates striking contrasts with whites, purples, and silvery foliage. It is the ideal climber for a romantic and green terrace.
- For a classic elegant red and white duo, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' evergreen white covers the lower part of the wall year-round — its permanent dark green foliage and summer white flowers highlight the intense red of the rose without competing with it.
- For a dramatic red and purple combination, the Clematis 'The President' purple grows complementarily on the same support — the large star-shaped purple flowers and the rose’s velvet red flowers create a rare two-tone intensity on a trellis or pergola.
- For a very harmonious red and cream composition, the Crazy in Love 'Vanilla' cream rose pairs delicately with the Red — the two repeat-flowering roses from the same range in contrasting shades create a passionate and luminous two-tone pergola.
- To enhance the red in a container on a sunny terrace, the Elho Greenville round white pot provides a neutral background that amplifies the brightness of the velvet red flowers — the white pot creates the clearest color contrast for this intense shade.
On a pergola, pair 'Crazy in Love Red' with a clematis that blooms at a different time — this way you get a succession of colors from spring to frost on the same support.
Verdeia tips
- Train stems fan-shaped from planting: stems oriented horizontally or fanned out on the support produce far more flowers than stems left vertical — this early orientation is the most effective technique to maximize red floral density throughout the season.
- Mulch the base from the start: 5 to 8 cm of mulch keeps roots cool, reduces evaporation in midsummer, and significantly lowers the risk of downy mildew — a preventive protection much more effective than any curative treatment.
- Fertilize with potassium-rich fertilizer: potassium directly intensifies the red color of flowers and strengthens disease resistance — regular feeding from spring to late summer ensures dense velvet red flowers and sustained repeat blooming.
