Frequently Asked Questions
How often should you water a variegated string of hearts? Wait until the substrate is dry to a depth of 3 cm before watering — about every 10 to 15 days in summer and once a month in winter, watching for slightly wrinkled leaves as a sign of thirst.
What is the difference between Ceropegia woodii and Ceropegia woodii Variegata? The Variegata has white-pink and silvery green variegated leaves instead of the marbled silver-gray of the typical species — it is rarer and more decorative but definitely requires more light to maintain its variegation.

🩶 Heart-shaped leaves variegated white-pink and silver green • 🌿 Ultra easy semi-succulent • ☀️ Bright indirect light required • 💧 Very low watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H38 cm | Pot Ø14 cm
Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii 'Variegata' is the variegated version of the classic string of hearts — rarer and more precious than the typical species, native to South Africa. Its heart-shaped leaves display a mix of silver green, cream, and pale pink, with a purple underside that intensifies in the light. Its long, slender trailing stems make it one of the best trailing plants for a shelf or hanging, delivered directly in its hanging pot with hook.
A semi-succulent storing water in its tubers, it is among the easiest plants in the catalog on one condition: providing enough light to maintain its characteristic variegation.
Which Ceropegia to choose?
The Verdeia Ceropegia collection offers several varieties with distinct foliage. Here is how to place the woodii Variegata among the available varieties:
- Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata' (this plant) — heart-shaped leaves variegated white-pink and silver green, purple stems. The rarest and most decorative version, with unique variegation on each leaf.
- Ceropegia woodii — heart-shaped silver-gray leaves marbled with green, purple stems. The classic version, more vigorous and easier to maintain in low light.
- Ceropegia linearis 'Iris' — narrower and elongated leaves, same very airy trailing habit. The finest and most graphic version.
- Ceropegia linearis 'Remy' — variegated foliage, very thin stems. The most delicate version in the range.
Light & placement
The Variegata requires even more light than the typical species — this is the main cultivation difference. Without bright light, the white-pink variegation gradually fades and new leaves regrow uniformly green, losing all the appeal of this rare variety. An east or west-facing windowsill is the ideal location.
- Light: bright indirect light — east or west-facing windowsill required; prolonged direct sun to be avoided.
- Placement: hanging, high shelf, windowsill — the naturally trailing habit creates a curtain effect of variegated hearts.
- Temperature: 16 to 28 °C — do not drop below 10 °C.
- Substrate: well-draining cactus and succulent soil — perfect drainage essential.
The more bright light the Variegata receives, the more intense and consistent the white-pink variegation — in insufficient light, new leaves regrow green and the plant gradually loses its distinctive variegated character.
Watering & care
Like all Ceropegia, the Variegata stores water in its tubers — excess water is its only real enemy. If leaves yellow, it is almost always a sign of overwatering. To propagate the plant, bury a stem node in the substrate or take a 10 cm cutting — same method as the typical species, but variegated cuttings root more slowly.
- Watering: only when the substrate is dry 3 cm deep — every 10 to 15 days in summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never let water stagnate in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: succulent fertilizer once a month in spring and summer only.
- Pruning: anytime — cut overly long stems and propagate the cuttings to thicken the pot.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into fresh, well-draining substrate.
When leaves are slightly wrinkled or less fleshy than usual, it signals the plant is thirsty — always wait for this sign before watering rather than following a fixed schedule, especially in winter.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The white-pink variegation of the Variegata is very distinctive — it works well both as a solo feature in a beautiful pot and as a refined element in a composition of varied trailing plants.
- For a very contrasting trailing duo, the classic Ceropegia woodii with darker silver-gray foliage creates a subtle contrast with the white-pink Variegata — same silhouette, two complementary colors, perfect harmony on the same shelf or in two adjacent hangings.
- For a three-level trailing composition, the Senecio herreianus with green oval leaves complements the two Ceropegia — three trailing succulents, three distinct leaf shapes, same minimal watering, coherent composition without constraints.
- For a romantic shelf arrangement, the Hedera helix 'Wonder Green' with dense dark green contrasts strongly with the airy variegated stems of the Variegata — the two trailing plants create a very natural and very different texture and color contrast.
- To enhance the variegation in a decorative pot, the Elho Vibes Fold decorative pot in powder pink Ø14 cm matches the pink shades of the variegated leaves — the color harmony between the pot and the leaf variegation amplifies the delicate and romantic side of this rare variety.
To thicken a sparse pot, cut back the longest stems and bury the nodes directly in the substrate of the same pot — adventitious roots quickly anchor and produce new variegated shoots that naturally densify the clump.
Verdeia tips
- Give it more light than you think necessary: the white-pink variegation is directly linked to light intensity — this is the main cultivation difference with the typical species; a Variegata placed too far from a window gradually loses its variegation and regrows solid green, permanently losing what makes it unique.
- Wait for the thirst signal before watering: slightly less fleshy or slightly wrinkled leaves indicate the plant needs water — watering at this precise moment rather than on a fixed date ensures vigorous growth without risk of tuber rot.
- Prune regularly to thicken the clump: stems can lengthen and tangle — cutting overly long stems and re-burying the nodes in the substrate of the same pot is the simplest technique to get a dense and well-filled clump rather than a few sparse long vines.
