Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of a Fargesia bamboo turn yellow in summer? Summer yellowing of Fargesia is almost always due to a lack of water or too much sun exposure — increase watering frequency and move the pot to partial shade if needed.
How far apart should you plant several Fargesia rufa to form a hedge? Plant them 80 cm to 1 m apart — the clumps naturally merge within 2 to 3 years to form a dense hedge without any shaping pruning.

🌿 Light green evergreen foliage all year round • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • 🚫 Non-spreading — no barrier needed • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
Fargesia rufa, or non-spreading umbrella bamboo, is a clumping bamboo native to the mountains of China, known for its graceful dense clump form and fine light green evergreen foliage. Unlike spreading bamboos, its rhizomes remain naturally compact and expand only a few centimeters per year — no rhizome barrier is needed, whether in a pot or in the ground. Available in 3 sizes, it fits perfectly on a balcony or terrace as well as among hardy plants for a light hedge or border.
Its exceptional hardiness down to –20 °C and minimal maintenance make it one of the most reliable bamboos for urban gardens and exposed outdoor spaces.
Which variety of Fargesia to choose?
The Verdeia Fargesia collection offers two varieties of non-spreading bamboos with distinct characters. Here’s how Fargesia rufa compares to the other catalog reference:
- Fargesia rufa (this plant) — reddish culms, fine and graceful light green foliage, rounded drooping clump form. Available in 3 sizes (Ø14×H40 cm, Ø19×H60 cm, Ø23×H80 cm). The classic versatile variety, ideal for a light hedge, green screen, or statement pot.
- Fargesia 'Moontears'® Boobux — more compact and dense form (H70 cm), very tight fine foliage. The modern variety for small spaces or large pot compositions.
Exposure & location
Fargesia rufa thrives in bright partial shade but tolerates gentle sun in the morning or evening. It withstands full sun in cooler regions, provided the soil remains consistently cool. A sheltered spot from wind preserves the fineness of its foliage and prevents tip drying.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid harsh full afternoon sun in summer.
- Location: balcony, terrace, garden — in a large pot or in the ground, light hedge, green screen.
- Soil: rich, cool, and well-drained — universal potting soil enriched with compost.
- In pot: container at least 40 cm deep, careful drainage — bamboo suffers from stagnant excess water.
Place it sheltered from drying winds, especially in winter — dry cold combined with wind causes leaf tips to yellow well before frost.
Watering & maintenance
Fargesia rufa is undemanding once established, but it hates water shortage during hot periods — especially in pots, the substrate should never dry out completely. The finger test at 5 cm depth is the best guide: if the substrate is dry, water. If tips yellow without winter cause, it often signals lack of water or too much sun.
- Watering: regular in summer, keep substrate slightly moist — less frequent in winter but never let it dry out completely.
- Maintenance: remove dry or damaged culms at the base in spring to aerate the clump.
- Fertilizer: one application of organic fertilizer in spring is enough to support new culm growth.
- Repotting: every 3 to 4 years, when the clump fills the pot volume.
In heatwaves, a thick mulch at the base in the ground keeps the soil cool and greatly reduces watering frequency.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The fine, drooping foliage of Fargesia rufa, its reddish culms, and rounded clump silhouette create a zen and graphic atmosphere that fits equally well in a contemporary Mediterranean garden or a dense outdoor jungle.
- For a natural green screen on a terrace, line up 3 Fargesia rufa in Ø19 size in large anthracite ceramic pots spaced 60 cm apart — the dense clump quickly forms an elegant plant screen that filters views without blocking light.
- For a minimalist zen composition, pair it with an Uncinia rubra 'Everflame' — the coppery red grass contrasts with the fine light green bamboo, on a complementary texture palette with similar care.
- For a light hedge in the ground, plant it every 80 cm to 1 m alongside the evergreen climbing honeysuckle on a trellis behind — two complementary vegetation layers, one dense and low, the other climbing and covering.
- For a large statement pot on a balcony, a grey waxed concrete or matte recycled plastic container fades behind the drooping clump and lets the grace of the culms take center stage.
When planted side by side, several Fargesia clumps merge within 2 to 3 years to form a dense, natural hedge without any shaping pruning needed.
Verdeia Tips
- Renew old culms every 2 to 3 years: cut the oldest and thickest culms at the base in spring — this stimulates the growth of new fine and vigorous culms, maintaining an airy and graceful form.
- Water generously during the first weeks after planting: Fargesia takes several weeks to root in its new spot — generous watering two to three times a week prevents water stress that would prematurely yellow the foliage.
- Never prune culms halfway up: unlike clipped hedges, bamboo does not regrow from a cut mid-stem — if a culm bothers you, cut it entirely at the base rather than shortening it.
