🌿 Green, purple, and silver medallion patterns • 🌤️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
The Calathea Medallion, also known as the Peacock Plant, is a tropical plant with broad, round leaves adorned with intricate medallion patterns — dark green on the surface with silver areas and deep purple undersides revealed with every movement. Its leaves fold up in the evening and unfurl in the morning, as if the plant awoke each day — a living movement that makes this species truly unique.
Native to the tropical forests of South America, it stands out among Calatheas for its roundest and densest patterns — dark green, silver areas, and deep purple undersides on the same leaf, a level of graphic complexity that few houseplants achieve.
Which Calathea variety should you choose?
Each Calathea has a distinct pattern — its foliage makes all the difference. Here is how the Medallion fits into the range, among the graphic-foliage plants in the Marantaceae family:
- Calathea Medallion (this plant) — broad, round leaves with intricate medallion patterns in green and silver, with purple undersides. The most artistic and rounded.
- Calathea Orbifolia — large round leaves with regular silver stripes. The brightest and most refined.
- Calathea Makoyana — translucent foliage with intricate stained-glass patterns. The most delicate and translucent.
- Calathea Warscewiczii — velvety dark green foliage with purple undersides. The most velvety.
- Calathea Majestica 'Princeps' — elongated dark green foliage with pink stripes and purple undersides. The most colorful with its pink stripes.
- Calathea Ornata — dark green foliage with fine pink stripes. The most graphic with its pink lines.
- Calathea Lancifolia — elongated light green foliage with dark green spots and purple undersides. The most distinctive with its elongated shape.
- Calathea Zebrina — velvety light green foliage with dark green zebra-like stripes. The most graphic in its contrast of greens.
Other varieties are available in our catalog — Fusion White, Stripestar, Bluegrass, Crocata, and more.
Light & placement
The Calathea Medallion thrives in partial shade and dislikes direct sun, which burns its leaves and fades the patterns. Its nyctinastic behavior - the leaves fold up in the evening and open in the morning - is more pronounced in spaces where the change in light between day and night is distinct. An article about the prayer plant explains this fascinating mechanism shared by the entire family.
- Ideal placement: moderate indirect light to partial shade - north- or east-facing window, bright room without direct sun.
- Tolerates: low light and natural ambient humidity (bathroom, kitchen).
- To avoid: direct sun, which burns the leaves and fades the patterns.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, away from drafts and sudden fluctuations.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining - universal potting soil with perlite.
Every plant is unique: the intensity of the medallion patterns naturally varies depending on the amount of light it receives and the season.
Watering & care
Calathea is sensitive to water quality - brown edges on the leaves are almost always caused by hard or fluoridated tap water, not by a watering problem. The finger method remains the best guide for determining frequency.
- Watering: moderate - keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become waterlogged.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer; reduce slightly in winter.
- Water: preferably low-limescale water - filtered water, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours.
- Humidity: mist regularly or group it with other plants - it thrives at 60–70% humidity.
- Drainage: essential - a pot with drainage holes is mandatory, and the saucer must be emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
Every plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, room temperature, and the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Calathea Medallion's medallion patterns create foliage that stands beautifully on its own - it does not need to be paired with other plants to serve as a focal point. To compose around it, use it as the cornerstone of a tropical atmosphere.
- In contrasting pairs: pair it with a Philodendron with large, solid green leaves - the Medallion's intricate patterns stand out even more against understated, glossy foliage that provides a neutral backdrop without visual competition.
- In a bright bathroom: the H45 cm | Pot Ø14 cm size is perfect for a bathroom shelf — the natural ambient humidity benefits it; place it in a pink ceramic relief decorative pot whose pink tone complements the purple undersides of the leaves.
- In a Marantaceae arrangement: pair it with a Maranta and a Ctenanthe for a trio of plants that share the same nyctinastic behavior — a living trio that moves in rhythm.
- Decorative pot and color palette: the purple undersides of the leaves stand out particularly well against a matte pink Groovy decorative pot — a warm harmony between the plant's purple tones and the ceramic's powder pink.
Verdeia tips
- Use water with low mineral content: Calathea's characteristic brown edges are almost always caused by fluoridated or hard tap water — switch to filtered water or water that has been left to stand for 24 hours, and new leaves will emerge without brown edges.
- Maintain adequate ambient humidity: in a heated apartment during winter, mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of damp clay pebbles — Calathea suffers from dry heating air more than any other factor.
- Observe the nighttime movement to assess the plant's health: if the leaves no longer fold up in the evening, it is often a sign of insufficient water or humidity — adjust conditions before the leaves curl or turn brown.
