The Zamioculcas zamiifolia, known as the ZZ plant, lines its fleshy stems, which emerge directly from the substrate, with glossy dark green oval leaflets. Native to the semi-arid regions of East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique), it holds a special place among the plants for dark entryways and hallways in the catalog.
Its distinctive feature is its underground rhizomes—large tubers that store water as a reserve. This allows it to go an entire month without watering while remaining full in a room where most foliage plants become leggy. Eight sizes suit everything from a desk ledge to a living room corner.
Light & placement
The Zamioculcas accepts an exceptionally wide range of light conditions, from bright filtered light to deep shade. It simply grows faster in medium light and more slowly in dark conditions, without ever becoming sparse.
- Light: indirect light to shade — tolerates artificial lighting in a windowless office. Keep it out of direct sun, which can mark the leaflets.
- Placement: hallway, entryway, bedroom, waiting room, office, windowless bathroom.
- Temperature: 15 to 27 °C — minimum 12 °C; it dislikes cold drafts.
- Soil type: very well-draining — cactus potting mix, or universal potting mix amended with one-third perlite.
In deep shade, new stems grow farther apart and slightly longer: moving the plant toward a light source for a few weeks is enough to restore a compact shape.
Watering & care
Excess water is the only real danger for this plant: the rhizomes rot silently before the foliage shows any signs. A substrate made with potting mix lightened with perlite and clay pebbles provides the best protection.
- Watering: very infrequent — wait until the substrate is dry all the way to the bottom of the pot, every 3 weeks in spring and summer, and once a month or less in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes, clay pebbles at the bottom, and a saucer emptied immediately after watering.
- Humidity: no requirements; it is not bothered by the dry air of heated interiors.
- Foliage: glossy leaflets quickly show dust — regularly wiping them with a damp cloth restores their characteristic shine.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for foliage plants, diluted to half strength, once every 8 weeks from April to September only.
- Repotting: every 3 years in spring — the rhizomes eventually deform the pot; this is the signal.
Stems that yellow one by one from the base almost always indicate watering too frequently, never a lack of water.

Verdeia tips
- Push your finger down to the bottom of the pot before watering: the surface may appear dry while the substrate remains moist deeper down. As long as you feel the slightest coolness around the rhizomes, postpone watering for a week.
- Divide the clump when repotting: a plant that has become too wide can easily be separated into two in spring by gently untangling the rhizomes by hand. Each half will establish on its own in a well-draining substrate, without hormones or any special precautions.
- Cut damaged stems flush with the substrate: a broken or yellowing stem will never grow back or repair itself. A clean cut at soil level leaves room for new shoots to emerge directly from the rhizome.
