The bedroom is a special space: we spend a third of our lives there, and both air quality and visual atmosphere directly affect sleep. Some plants are perfectly suited to this calm environment, often with low light, where serenity is the main goal.
Can you really have plants in a bedroom?
Yes, and it is even recommended. The idea that plants "steal oxygen at night" is a persistent myth: the amount of CO2 they release is negligible compared to that of a pet or a bed partner. However, some species help purify the air by filtering volatile compounds found in furniture, paints, and textiles. Our article Indoor plants and air quality: myths and realities covers this topic in detail.
The best plants for the bedroom
Spathiphyllum (peace lily) is a classic: it tolerates partial shade, purifies the air, and produces subtle white flowers. Sansevieria (snake plant) is one of the few plants that continue to produce oxygen at night thanks to its CAM metabolism. Aloe vera shares this trait while remaining very easy to care for. Find these species in our Spathiphyllum, Sansevieria, and Aloe collections.
Soothing plants for better sleep
Beyond purification, some plants create a restful atmosphere with their soft, rounded foliage. Calathea, with leaves that fold up at night as if to "sleep" too, bring a calming green presence. Chlorophytum (spider plant) and Pothos are also excellent choices, being hardy and low-maintenance. Discover our selection of air-purifying plants and read our guide on plants that purify the air.
Dark bedroom: which plants to choose?
Bedrooms are often north-facing or equipped with shutters that limit light. This is not a problem: Zamioculcas, Aglaonema, Aspidistra, and Dracaena thrive in low light. To explore further, check out our plants for shade and partial shade collection and our guide indoor plants for every room.
Minimal care to avoid disrupting your routine
An ideal bedroom plant is one you can almost forget about. No daily watering, no leaves dropping everywhere, no need to rotate towards the light. Sansevieria only needs watering every 2 to 3 weeks, Zamioculcas even less. If you’re a beginner, these species are perfect — see our selection of easy-care plants and no-maintenance plants.
Bedroom and pets: safe plants
If your cat or dog shares your bedroom, plant toxicity is a crucial factor. Chlorophytum, Calathea, and some ferns are certified non-toxic. Find all pet-friendly species in our pet-friendly indoor plants collection and read our article creating a green relaxation corner at home.
