Callisia repens forms a spreading mat of small oval leaves in a uniform matte gray-green, with purple-tinged undersides and stems. Native to the tropical regions of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, it joins the catalog's hanging and trailing plants.
Its distinctive feature compared with other Callisia varieties is its understated appearance: no variegation or strong contrast, just an even gray-green that goes with everything. It is among the fast-growing plants capable of filling a hanging decorative pot in a single season.
Which Callisia should you choose?
The Callisia genus includes several foliage varieties that are very similar in form but clearly distinct in color:
- Callisia repens (this plant) — uniform gray-green foliage forming a spreading mat. The most understated version.
- Callisia repens 'Turtle' — dense olive green with purple undersides, forming a rounded cushion (H15 cm | Pot Ø10,5 cm). The most compact version.
- Variegated Callisia repens — silver stripes on a green background, purple stems (H14 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most colorful version.
Light exposure & placement
Callisia tolerates a wide range of light conditions but becomes sparse in shade: the stems stretch, the leaves become more widely spaced, and the mat loses its density. Good indirect light keeps the plant compact and full.
- Light exposure: bright indirect light — east- or west-facing window, or south-facing glass door with a sheer curtain. A few hours of gentle sunlight are tolerated.
- Placement: shelf, hanging planter, windowsill, desk — anywhere the stems can trail freely.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C — minimum 12 °C, sensitive to cold drafts.
- Soil type: light universal potting soil, amended with a little perlite.
Stems that grow longer with long gaps between the leaves indicate a lack of light: moving the plant closer to a window makes subsequent growth denser.
Watering & care
The fleshy leaves of Callisia store a little water, allowing it to tolerate an occasional missed watering. A light, well-draining substrate, on the other hand, prevents the stems from rotting at the crown, while the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry to a depth of 2 cm, approximately once a week in spring and summer, and every two weeks in winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential; empty the saucer after every watering.
- Foliage: keep dry — water that stagnates between the tightly packed leaves quickly causes the stems to rot.
- Humidity: no special requirements; normal room air suits it.
- Pruning: pinch the tips regularly to thicken the carpet and prevent the stems from becoming bare at the base.
- Fertilizer: half-strength liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month from April to September only.
The plant ages from the base: after two or three years, it is better to renew it completely from cuttings rather than trying to rejuvenate the mother plant.

- Water at the base, never over the foliage: the tightly packed leaves retain water and rot on contact. Pour directly onto the substrate along the inside edge of the pot.
- Renew the plant every two years: the stems naturally become bare at the base with age. Starting again from fresh cuttings gives much better results than rejuvenation pruning.
