Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of my Ctenanthe have brown spots? Brown spots on the leaves almost always indicate water that is too hard or air that is too dry. Switch to filtered or rested water for at least 24 hours, and double the misting frequency. Fluorides present in tap water are particularly harmful to Marantaceae.
What is the difference between a Ctenanthe and a Calathea? Both belong to the Marantaceae family and share the same needs (partial shade, humidity, non-calcareous water). The main visual difference is that Ctenanthe generally has longer stems and a more open habit, while Calathea often has a more compact, rosette form. Both exhibit nyctinasty and have colored leaf undersides (purple or red).

🌿 Variegated foliage with graphic stripes • 🎨 Spectacular purple underside • 🌓 Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🪴 Included handcrafted two-tone ceramic pot • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Ctenanthe burle-marxii is a tropical plant from the Marantaceae family, native to Brazil. Its large oblong leaves feature a graphic pattern of dark green stripes on a light green background — and an intense purple underside revealed with every leaf movement. Like its Calathea cousins, it practices nyctinasty: its leaves rise at night and lower during the day — a living plant spectacle.
Non-toxic, delivered in its included handcrafted two-tone ceramic pot — matte cream lower part, black upper part with iridescent glazed effect. Discover it in our Calathea collection and in our selection of non-toxic plants for low light.
Which Ctenanthe variety to choose?
The Ctenanthe genus offers several varieties with distinct foliage:
- Ctenanthe burle-marxii in handcrafted ceramic (this plant) — H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. Graphic striped foliage, purple underside, compact size.
- Ctenanthe burle-marxii in white pot — same plant in a sleek white pot, H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm.
- Ctenanthe setosa — wider and more upright leaves, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The large size version.
- Ctenanthe oppenheimiana — tricolor foliage in green, cream, and red, H70 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most colorful version.
Why choose the Burle Marxii? It is the most compact and graphic variety of the genus — its precise stripes and purple underside make it the most decorative Ctenanthe for office or shelf size.
Exposure & placement
The Ctenanthe burle-marxii prefers partial shade and indirect light — an ideal plant for low-light spaces. Our light and humidity guide details how to optimize its placement.
- Exposure: partial shade to filtered indirect light — avoid direct sun that fades the stripes and burns the leaves.
- Ideal: shaded corner, bright bathroom, office without direct sun, shelf away from windows.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, without cold drafts.
- Substrate: light, well-drained, and rich in organic matter.
Watch its leaves to assess placement — if they stand upright strongly and stay upright during the day, it lacks light. If the stripes fade, it’s too bright.
Watering & care
The Ctenanthe prefers a slightly moist substrate and high ambient humidity. Check our watering guide to find the right rhythm.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without soaking.
- Frequency: about 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: use room temperature water, filtered or left to rest for 24h — sensitive to lime.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 70% humidity — mist regularly or place on damp clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: every 4 weeks in spring-summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
Brown leaf tips indicate air that is too dry — double the misting frequency or place a humidifier nearby.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The graphic pattern of the stripes and the purple underside create a unique two-tone foliage — a natural plant artwork that changes perspective depending on the viewing angle.
- In combination: pair it with a Maranta fascinator or a Calathea Makoyana — same family, same needs, complementary foliage. Find more ideas in our tropical plant pairing guide.
- Included pot: the artisanal two-tone ceramic pot (matte cream at the bottom, iridescent glazed black at the top) is included — a unique container that enhances the graphic character of the foliage.
- Atmosphere: perfect in a shaded corner, bathroom, or office — its daily leaf movements create a living, changing plant presence.
Verdeia tips
- Nyctinasty — a daily show — like all Marantaceae, Ctenanthe moves its leaves in response to light: they lower during the day to capture light and raise at night. If the leaves stop moving, it often signals stress (lack of water, too dry air, or unsuitable location).
- Non-limescale water essential — Ctenanthe is particularly sensitive to limescale and fluorides found in tap water. Always use filtered, rain, or tap water left to rest for at least 24 hours — brown spots on leaves are often linked to limescale water.
- Constant humidity — this is its main requirement. Mist the leaves several times a week with non-limescale water. A bright bathroom is an ideal location — the natural humidity there is sufficient without extra effort.
- Non-toxic for pets and children — Ctenanthe poses no risk if touched or accidentally ingested, making it an excellent choice for homes with pets or children.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
