🌿 Spectacular white-silver veins • 🎨 Glossy dark green arrow-shaped leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm — H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Alocasia Polly, also known as Elephant Ear, is a graphic and elegant plant known for its glossy dark green arrow-shaped leaves with highly pronounced white-silver veins that create a striking contrast. The most popular Alocasia variety in our collection — both accessible and spectacular.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia (horticultural hybrid), Alocasia × amazonica 'Polly' naturally grows in humid, shaded undergrowth. Watering, humidity and the winter dormancy period are the three keys to successfully growing Alocasias.
Which Alocasia variety should you choose?
The Alocasia genus offers a great diversity of shapes and sizes — here is how Alocasia Polly differs from the other compact varieties in the catalogue:
- Alocasia Polly (this plant) — dark green arrow-shaped leaves with highly pronounced white-silver veins. The classic graphic variety and the most accessible.
- Alocasia Bambino Arrow — smaller, narrower arrow-shaped leaves with less pronounced veins. The miniature, more discreet variety.
- Alocasia Dragon Scale — thick leaves with silver scale-like veins and a highly pronounced raised texture. The rare textured variety.
- Alocasia Red Secret — glossy burgundy-red leaves developing into dark green with coppery reflections. The spectacular colorful variety.
- Alocasia Jacklyn — deeply lobed leaves with a prehistoric appearance, highly graphic. The rarest lobed variety.
- Alocasia Lukiwan — silver leaves with dark green veins, creating a highly graphic reversed effect. The rare silver variety.
- Alocasia Zebrina — spectacular striped stems, dark green foliage. The variety with the most decorative stems.
Light and placement
Alocasia Polly needs good indirect light to maintain the intensity of its silvery-white veins - light determines whether the contrast remains spectacular or gradually fades.
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade - avoid direct sun, which burns the leaves.
- Ideal: office, shelf, living room, or bedroom with a well-lit window without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, with no sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining - universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more striking the silvery-white veins and the contrast with the dark green.
Watering & care
Alocasia Polly is sensitive to excess water - waterlogged substrate quickly causes yellowing leaves and rhizome rot. Good watering practices are particularly important for this species.
- Watering: moderate - let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential - use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: enjoys 60–70% humidity - mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine and veins.
It is normal for Alocasia Polly to lose a lower leaf when producing a new one - this is its natural cycle, not a sign of poor health.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its silvery-white veins against a dark green background, Alocasia Polly adds a bold graphic touch to plant arrangements - it naturally pairs with plants featuring patterned or textured foliage for sophisticated tropical arrangements.
- Create a trio of graphic foliage by pairing Alocasia Polly with a Calathea Lancifolia with narrow, patterned leaves and an Anthurium Crystallinum with pearly veins - three plants with highly pronounced veins and three very different leaf shapes.
- In the H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm size, place it on a desk or shelf in the white textured ceramic Ø13.5 cm decorative pot — the matte white maximizes the contrast with the glossy dark green foliage.
- In the H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm size, place it in a living room corner in the Elho Brussels Anthracite Ø20 cm decorative pot — the anthracite grey accentuates the graphic precision of the silvery-white veins.
- Pair it with an Alocasia Dragon Scale with raised silvery veins and a more miniature Alocasia Bambino Arrow — three Alocasias, three levels of vein intensity, a composition entirely within the genus.
Verdeia tips
- Maintain high humidity: in a heated apartment during winter, dry air causes the leaf edges to turn brown — mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby to compensate.
- Wipe the leaves once a month: dust on the glossy dark green surfaces reduces the contrast with the silvery veins — gently wiping each leaf with a damp cloth instantly restores the foliage's graphic brilliance.
- Repot every 2 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining substrate — when done properly, repotting stimulates the growth of new leaves with even more pronounced veins.
