🌿 Large glossy deep green leaves • 🌤️ Bright light to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
The Ficus Elastica 'Robusta', also known as the Rubber Plant, is an absolute houseplant classic — with large, thick, glossy deep green oval leaves, polished like leather, growing from a trunk that gradually becomes woody. Its structured silhouette and shiny foliage make it a botanical centerpiece capable of standing out in any space.
Native to Southeast Asia and India, it belongs to the Ficus Elastica collection, among which Robusta is the most understated and classic version — solid deep green, without variegation, for maximum plant presence without complexity. Available in three sizes, it is also one of the hardiest plants in our selection of nearly indestructible plants.
Which Ficus Elastica variety should you choose?
The Ficus Elastica genus comes in several varieties with distinct colors. Here is where Robusta stands:
- Ficus Elastica Robusta (this plant) — large, glossy, solid deep green leaves and a slender woody trunk. The most classic and understated.
- Ficus Elastica Tineke — cream, green, and powder pink tricolor variegation. The most refined.
- Ficus Elastica Belize — pink, cream, and green variegation with vibrant pink tones. The most colorful.
- Ficus Elastica Abidjan — dark green foliage with a burgundy-red central vein. The most graphic in dark tones.
Robusta is the only Ficus Elastica to offer solid, deep green foliage without variegation — ideal if you want a strong, architectural plant presence without colorful distractions.
Light & placement
The Ficus Elastica Robusta prefers bright, filtered light and also tolerates partial shade — a rare tolerance for such a large, architectural plant. However, it is sensitive to being moved: once settled, it is best left in its final location. To understand how light affects your plants, see our guide to balancing light and humidity indoors.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light - east- or west-facing window, bright living room, modern office.
- Tolerates: partial shade, a sheltered terrace or balcony in summer (min. 15 °C).
- To avoid: prolonged direct sun that burns the leaves and cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C, minimum 12 °C.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining - universal potting soil with perlite.
Every plant is unique: the shape and density of its foliage naturally change depending on light levels and the season.
Watering & care
Ficus Elastica prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered - yellowing and leaf drop are almost always linked to excessive watering. Check using the finger test: water only when the first 2 to 3 centimeters of substrate are dry.
- Watering: moderate - let the top 2–3 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer; every 2 to 3 weeks in winter.
- Water: non-calcareous, at room temperature.
- Drainage: essential - a pot with drainage holes is required, and the saucer should be emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer.
Every plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, room temperature, and the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The glossy, deep green foliage of Ficus Elastica Robusta serves as a strong botanical backdrop in any arrangement - its restrained color palette highlights the more colorful plants around it. To explore pairings further, discover our ideas for incorporating large plants into your home.
- In a contrasting duo: pair it with a Calathea with intricate patterns - the Robusta's solid, glossy deep green highlights the Calathea's graphic patterns without competing with them.
- As a centerpiece in the living room: the H85 cm size stands alone in a corner - place it in a natural Selin basket whose blonde fiber creates a warm contrast with the deep green of the leaves.
- In a composition with other Ficus Elastica plants: pair it with Tineke to play with two extremes - Robusta's deep solid green against Tineke's cream-and-pink tricolour variegation.
- Decorative pot and colour scheme: the deep glossy green stands out particularly well against an anthracite Brussels decorative pot - a classic contrast that enhances the shine of the foliage and adds character to the plant's silhouette.
Verdeia tips
- Choose its permanent location upon delivery: Ficus Elastica is sensitive to being moved - each change of location may cause temporary leaf drop, which subsides within a few weeks if conditions remain stable.
- Wipe the large leaves regularly: the broad, glossy leaves collect dust that dulls their natural shine - a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to keep them looking their best.
- Turn the pot a quarter turn every month: the Ficus naturally grows towards the light - regular rotation ensures a balanced shape on all sides and prevents asymmetrical growth.
